I would love it if a few of you would read my post on whether an Intel Anniversary Edition G3258 and an AMD HD 5850 would play Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition. The game crashes on load. But that is for a different post.

Is there any chance a G3258 and an HD 5850 would be able to play BGIII? I have some computers I know will play it, but I am already thinking about LAN parties, so I want a few that can do it.

Will HD 7870s play BGIII? I have two computers still running 7870s in Crossfire.

You need a 3GB GPU minimum to run BG3. 5850 is 1GB so that's out of the question. 7870 is 2GB. I'm not sure if two of these cards can run it, but one by itself can't.

Running in crossfire copies the same data into the ram on both cards, so you still only get 2GB effective.

Also, my kids both have i5 3570K CPUs, so will the game not load up with the 3rd generation CPUs? 3xxx<4xxx=No.

I think games are generally less sensitive to CPU type. I suspect your CPUs will run the game (although they could potentially cause some issue, although thats doubtful).

According to Tom's Hardware, the 3570K and the 4690 are in the same tier, and so you shouldn't have trouble running the game based on CPU. GPU may be another issue, and I can't speak to that.

CPU is typically meant for calculating stuff on the fly. MMOs and city builders are where CPUs shine the most. You don't really need a beefcake CPU for most games. I have a garbage 4460, and my worst case situation with most games (at the moment) is running them on high instead of ultra or max.

Good points, but if the game designers programmed it to not even load up with lesser CPUs or GPUs, then we cannot even try the game at lower settings.

Hope my kids can play it with their 3570K CPUs, and I do hope 7870s can at least load it up.... But getting a new video card is easier than building a new system.


My friend has a 2600K and he was planning on playing BG3. With his 2600K overclocked to 4.4 GHz with 16GB of ram and an RX 460 with 4 GB, I hope he can play it.

Some games have mods to lower the graphics settings below minimum to compensate for low end PCs. The one for Skyrim is the best example I can think of. There are also mods to fix inefficient programming. Fallout 4, Cities Skylines, and Skyrim are some titles that have these mods. If bad comes to worse you can just wait for a mod like this to come out. Games in general are getting more optimized, so the next PC you build will probably last longer than your current one.

So it loads and plays with i5 3570K and Crossfire 7870s, but it is not too playable. It might be better when I get past the intro where there seems to be a high demand for graphics. This is likely where the 2GB of ram on the 7870 shows its weakness. I bet with a better card, the i5 3570k will be fine.

Keep in mind, as NVidia cards go, 780's are pretty old beasts. They just announced the new 30XX-series cards, after all!

You can find GTX 16XX-series cards for under two hundred bucks on NewEgg right now. I'm looking at a search now, and found this ASUS-built 4GB 1650 for $149.99US (plus $3 S&H).

It wouldn't let you run the game on High, but it cerainly should run the game at all ... and do it better than my old 970 would have!

(Obligatory moment of gloating: on the other hand, my current card, a 2070 Super, runs everything dialled up to twelve ... :) )

The Crossfire 7870s were playing the game last night ok. I set some of the graphics to medium the day before, but maybe I did not exit the game completely because there was no idiot reminder to do so like in NWN2. Maybe that was it or the hotfix the next day, but it played ok.

I did order a Vega 56 for my computer, and I will move my current RX 570 to my daughter's computer, replacing the Crossfire 7870s, but for people with 7870s, it might play just fine.
