By Canon Party I mean the one it assumes you finished BG1 with (Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Dynaheir, Minsc). Who do you think are the best replacements, both in terms of gameplay and party chemistry, for the two who didn't make it (and the third who goes AWOL)?
Meant to say, my initial thoughts are Keldorn to replace Khalid, and Aerie to replace Dynaheir, though I could easily see Mazzy and Valygar being viable options in there as well.

I'd personally switch them (meaning the new companions in BG2) in and out as you see fit, since they all have quests associated with them.

Companions in BG2 don't leave the game after disbanding, so you can have which ever one you like.

MAJOR SPOILERS! (apparently)
The first time I finished BG2 + Throne of Bhaal, was with Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc, the big S and Haer'Dalis. But I had Cernd, Nalia, Yoshimo and Aerie in my party at some time in that run.

Now I'm replaying (for the 3rd! time) BGT and while I'm still in the Baldur's Gate area, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc, Montaron, Xzar, Dynaheir and Xan are already dead (it happens).
In my party: Imoen, Edwin, Viconia and Shar-Teel; great fun :D
The "canon" goes right out of the window after the first run.

Sorry, I didn't realise that saying who died in my game (the Baldur's Gate 1 part for that matter) was spoiling it. They died in battle (or were killed for picking a fight with me), so it's of no consequence to your game.

Gromuhl: Sorry, I didn't realise that saying who died in my game (the Baldur's Gate 1 part for that matter) was spoiling it. They died in battle (or were killed for picking a fight with me), so it's of no consequence to your game.
It was probably less who died and more the whole who you finished the game with the first time (specifically the Big S)

It's not a spoiler. None of the deaths he mentioned are plot-specific. Any of the companions can die in battle at any time, and it's up to the player whether or not they want to raise them or just continue without them.
