Hey everyone,
Simple problem, complex backstory.

Every time I try and rest in Chapter 3 of Baldur's Gate 1, the game locks up. No crash, no error report. I have to open terminal and xkill the sucker. Even Baldur.err is empty. I can rest to my heart's content in my chapter 2 saves. The second I go to Nashkel, the game freezes on rest 100% of the time. Doesn't matter if it's at an inn or in the wilderness. I tried running back and forth for an in-game week to see if it would resolve itself over time, but it didn't work.

I'm running the game on Linux Mint 18.3 via WINE. Both games are in a shared folder after C:\. Needless to say, the game has been running like a dream up to this point and continues to... as long as I don't rest.

I think that it's the dream sequence at the beginning of Chapter 3 that's triggering it. I have no idea why it's only now becoming a problem though. I've already seen the first dream sequence and it worked just fine. (EDIT: I totally misremembered this. My character DOES NOT have any of the dream spells.) I also don't know how to avoid the dream sequence without turning this into a no-rest run.

Here's the mods I have installed (in order):
-BG2 Fixpack
-Baldur's Gate Trilogy
-BG1 Unfinished Business
-BG2 Unfinished Business
-Widescreen Mod
-BGT Big World Map
-Generalized Biffing

Here's what else I've tried:
-run tolower in the BG1 directory
-disable movies in baldur.ini
-delete temp folder in BG2 directory
-delete tempsave folder in BG2 directory
-run tolower in both game directories
-reinstall BG1
-run tolower run tolower

Any ideas are appreciated. Let me know if I should post more info.

If it's a problem with chapter 3's dream then "go to Nashkel" shouldn't be a factor, because chapter 3 starts when Mulahey dies. So are you in chapter 2 or chapter 3?

I think vv221 is right: my BGT saves say Chapter 3, but the online Wikis call this Chapter 2. That's why I got confused and thought I had already seen one of the dream sequences. Not sure why the makers of BGT thought this was a necessary change.

I guess this is worth a try. I'm sending you two files:

- One is an empty DRMTXT2.2DA. This file normally governs the text and good/evil powers from the dream for chapter 2 (vanilla chapter 2, which starts when you first gets to Nashkel). The file I'm sending you is empty though, which means if the dream plays at all, you won't see any text and won't get any powers. This is to make sure it always works, then we'll go from there.
- The other is the original GUICHAP file, which contains the background images for all dreams. This is from vanilla BG1, not BGT, so it may not work. It's possible BGT makes changes to these GUI files.

First copy both files into your Override. See if that makes any difference. If it doesn't work or some GUI issue crops up, then try deleting the GUICHAP file, then try again.

This should help make sure whether this is really a problem with the dream or not. If this turns out to be an OS problem, then I'm afraid I can't help you.

I put both files in the BG2 override folder like you asked and ran tolower again. The game wouldn't even boot with guichap.chu in there. The game still hangs when I rest with drmtxt2.2da in the override folder, but it didn't flash or anything. I'm not sure what that means.

I also tried using shadowkeeper to edit my character's dream state. The default was -1 and I tried 0 and 1. There were no perceptible changes.

Good news: I got my game working. I'm now convinced that it was a mere coincidence that it crashed on the dream sequence.

I reinstalled BG1, BG2, BGT, and all my mods. The only thing I changed was the order. The one that worked for me was the following:
-BG2 Fixpack
-BGT
-BGT Big World Map
-Widescreen Mod
-BG1 Unfinished Business
-BG2 Unfinished Business
-BGT Big World Map again (I had a creepy glitch where the map text was replaced by long strings of text about a murder. I don't want to talk about it.)
-Bigger Fonts (which I forgot to mention earlier)
-Generalized Biffing (This may be the culprit, at least on my Linux rig. The last install I biffed everything, this time I only selectively biffed the music and such.)

I don't think this will help anyone, but there's my secret. Maybe someone smarter than me can figure out what actually happened. Now I just need to find an exorcist for my haunted Baldur's Gate installation.

Indeed, I am able to use my old saves in the new installation. It seems all I lost was a few hours.
