As previously mentioned I have installed BGI and BGII using the steps and mods posted by GoJays2025. I also installed a few additional mods from a guide on a website called tamrielfoundry.

I'm currently testing things in Candlekeep before I set out on my adventure as I don't want to encounter any problems later on.

I'm finding gameplay to be very stuttery, like the whole game will slow down for a few seconds even when just walking around the town, and then be okay again. Next I took part in the fight training in the basement and it was almost unplayable. Final point is that I tried to cast the Entangle spell at which point everything moved so slowly that it did become unplayable.

I've tweaked various settings in the BG2 Control Panel and it has improved things like walking around town but I still find the slowness to kick in now and again, especially in combat and when the aforementioned spell is cast. I have looked on-line and found a few pieces of advice but nothing so far seems to have completely resolved the issue for me.

Does anyone have any experience of this happening and if so can they post what steps they took to resolve it? I really want to start playing BG again but want to get the game in good working order first!

Your computer specs are not the problem, they are more than adequate.

Regarding your log, it sounds like it is too big to post. In that case, zip a copy of it up, rename the .zip to .jpg and attach it to this forum -- you must rename it, because the forum will only allow .jpg attachments.

After doing what Hickory said, if the problem continues you can make sure that you selected Nvidia as your Display Adapter. Most Laptops nowadays have 2 GPUs (incase one of them fails) and Intel GPUs are known to cause problems with older games. Goodluck.

Also try this:

open baldur.ini, look under [Game Options] and change both "Low Mem Sounds 1" and "Low Mem Sounds 2" values to 1 (default is 0), i.e. it should be like this

Low Mem Sounds 1=1
Low Mem Sounds 2=1

This fix is usually required nowadays, unless one is using old hardware.

Just be careful that bgconfig may, in some cases, reset those settings to the default values undoing the fix. So, after using bgconfig, you should check again baldur.ini and, if necessary, put those values back to 1.

The intel chip is part of your CPU (Core i5 560M). It's relatively weak but suitable for basic office tasks.
The NVIDIA chip is much more powerful and designed for gaming. Usually, the Intel GPU is disabled when a better one is detected. You could try if you can disable it in your BIOS settings. That might speed things up.

Sorry for the slow response and thanks a lot for your suggestions.

Regarding the multiple graphics cards, I have since enabled "discreet" graphics in the BIOS which has removed the Intel one from Device Manager so I now only have the NVIDIA one. My "Windows Experience" score went up for graphics after doing this so I gave the game another try and things have definitely improved again. I was actually able to cast several entanglement spells at the same time with no slowness which is great!

It did slow down a little later on though, seemingly at quite random moments when nothing particularly graphically intensive is happening. When I ALT+TAB back to Windows to check Task Manager it looks as though the CPU is being pushed pretty hard at these points so I'm going to look into that a bit more too.

I've applied the Low Mem Sounds fix now but not tried the game yet since doing so, going to have a play tonight I hope.

Regarding the mods, I'm pretty sure I followed the guide that was on here (with a little additional modding from the other page I mentioned) so I'm a bit confused why it would be in a mess. I have quite a few questions here:

- Is it definitely listed in "load order" as the log file itself says at the top: "The top of the file is the 'oldest' mod".
- How would the load order of the mods affect the speed of the game? Please forgive my ignorance here!
- Is it safe to uninstall everything at this point and then reinstall them? I'd quite like to keep my current game intact.
- When you say "from last to first", do you mean uninstalling WIDESCREEN.TP2 first or DDRAWFIX.TP2 first?
- When reinstalling, I'm guess you are recommending installing DDRAWFIX.TP2 first and working down through the list?

1. Yes, Weidu installs things in a serial fashion. What is installed first is listed first in the log.
2. In a word: compatibility. It may not, but it has to be ruled out, and installing at maximum compatibility is paramount.
3. Yes. But you *must* install the widescreen mod at exactly the same resolution, or your saved games will crash.
4. Uninstall widescreen first, then move on up the list. See 1 above.
5. Yes.
