After a lot of trial and error finally got the widescreen and GUI mods working in BG1, NOW BG1 is randomly minimising it's self. Any ideas please?

What do you mean a lot of work? Not sure what GUI mod you might be using but the Widescreen mod is straightforward. You are talking about plain old vanilla BG1 and not Tutu or something, right?

Yeah, that's right.

The trouble came downloading the game via the GOGdownloader. I could not mod the game until I downloaded it normally.
None of the guides made that clear.

Found this solution to a similar problem:

Hapstance: What title says, game loads and credits start, it minimizes but keeps playing, i go back into the game and make it to main menu but it keeps alt tabbing litteraly every second, making gameplay impossible.

Nerritti: I had the same problem in Win 7. I solved it by right clicking on the shortcut that starts the game (I use a desktop one), select properties, go to the tab "compability" and check the boxes "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition". This makes Win 7 turn off some graphic gimicks while the game is running, and re-enable them when the game ends.
