chams999: So, do you guys dual class as human, or multi class as a different race?
I always preferred multiclassing, because I like having both classes gain levels, and because it's less management, but I've heard that dual classing is more powerful, as you can pick and choose exactly what you want.

riddleofsteel: I don't know if I should ask this here, but would a half-elf ranger/cleric be "unfair" to use starting in BG1? And what weapons should I drop points into? I was thinking flail and mace.
I dual classed in BG1 (FTR to Mage). It was awesome. For BG2, I'm probably going to go with a 1/2 Elf multiclass FTR/Thief for grins.

For BG1 I went with bows (longbow) and large swords.

For BG2, probably going with katana and longsword and dual wield style.
Thank you, Coelocanth. However, I am using BGT so I can't specialize in Large Swords. Would Longsword be okay? I'm not sure how BGT would affect choosing to dual from fighter to mage, but I don't think it would matter.

I think longsword would be okay. Not sure what items are in BG2 (can't recall), but I know there's a good katana that you can get fairly early on though.

I don't really see why it would be considered unfair. As for points, Flails and maces sound good. The Crom Fayer in BG2 is a warhammer, but that should always be in your offhand. I would recommend having some points for that as well. That wouldn't really be a concern in BG1 though, so it's not something that you should stress over. Of course, Crom Fayer isn't a must to make this build viable. It's just...really, really nice to have.
Okay, thanks. I'm down to deciding between a human paladin (no kit) for bg1 or a half-orc cleric (also pure class). Is it a coin toss or is one better than the other for ease of use and playability? If I go paladin, I'd probably choose long sword and bow for weapon skills, or else some form of ranged weapon. What do you think: short bow? Long bow? Sling maybe? If there's yet another class build I should be looking at, please let me know.

Both of those classes should work just fine! I'll always recommend taking two-handed swords on a paladin just because of the Carsomyr + 5 that you can get fairly early in the game. It's usable by paladins only and every time you hit something, you dispel all magic effects on it. Not to mention it's also a +5 sword!
I don't think either class would be particularly hard to play as. A paladin would be more simple and you'd have more health and survivability. You'd have more utility as a cleric, however.

Isn't carsomyr in BG2? I'm starting in BG1, would you still recommend 2h swords?

It's definitely not as big a deal in BG1. If consistency matters to you, then go for it! Really though, if you'd prefer sticking to one-handers I can't really see any drawbacks. You'll be fine either way.
I've actually created a Dual wielding Paladin, Daystar and Purifier. There are alot of good options to do in this game.
black razor and celestial fury is almost unfair.

Yeah but there is no way a Pally is dual wielding with the Black Razor.
There's a way, my undead hunter got through tob with black razor and celestial fury. It worked fine with no problems.

deathknight1728: Twoweapon fighting for both bg1 and 2. However, if you are playing bg1tutu or trilogy, and are starting up then 1 in the weapon so you dont suffer any disadvantages, and 1 in two weapon fighting. At lvl 4 you put the other in two weapon fighting and at lvl 8 you should be specialized. The reason you do this instead of all in weapon or all in two weapon is that you wont be lvl 4 for a little while so you need to be able to fight at least a bit. In baldurs gate 2 this is not a problem as you start at level 8 so 2 and 2.

Swashbucklers are good in both games, though i would gather are better in bg2.
Cheers, I was thinking of something similar though I was thinking of filling up the weapon first, doing it your way makes more sense though. I wasn't sure if the dual wielding would be still much use once I went mage or if I should gain proficiency in two different weapons rather than specialising in one (though I'll be able to gain proficiency in daggers and a few others at least when leveling up in mage so it's probably better to specialise thinking about it).
Well I went with an elf sorcerrer!

sorc. are so overpowered in this game, BG2 of course, and even more overpowered in ToB. I my stats are 9 19 17 18 18 9, so many rerolls i used to get those stats..... Anywhoooo.... Back in the day i played so much I got him to level 40 and SOLOED the entire game + Tower on VERY HARD.... so dumb... :)
