My evil-aligned party has just stumbled into a fight with this chap. The resulting stramash was considerably more bloody than I anticipated but my team survived. I was surprised by the difficulty, the huge xp and swag bonuses and the large drop in reputation. Without too many spoilers, please (hence why I haven't consulted Google), have I killed a character who is integral to the plot or can I carry on my merry way?

Drizzt is just a cameo and is there to provide some "excitement" to core D&D fans since Drizzt Do'urden is VERY famous. He is a legend and that's why he is extremely difficult but there are no consequences of killing him even with a good aligned party as far as I know. Except the reputation hit of course.
Many thanks!
There can be consequences if you import your game in BGII

Game-breaking consequences? If it is just a bit of aggro, I can live with that.

In BGII certain persons will know you killed Drizz't. This has consequences but not gamebreaking ones (that would be poor design)

Grand. Thanks. I like the idea of having a bad reputation :)

Fairly sure that's incorrect actually. If you kill someone in Baldur's Gate, they will be alive again by Baldur's Gate II. You don't import any story decisions from Baldur's Gate I to II. Mods might alter this.

Yeah, Drizzt comes back in BG2, but he remembers that you killed him. He's just as pissed off about it as you'd expect, and tries to kill you, along with his friends. (That said, with how powerful your party is by the time you meet him, it's a fairly one-sided fight.)

I've googled some more and turns out we're both wrong. He doesn't remember that you killed him (story variables don't transfer over), but if you have any of his items a story variable will be set automatically.

So just because you took his stuff he assumes you killed him, and he chooses to believe in this despite being alive. That makes sense.

I hate everything about how recurring characters are handled in Baldur's Gate II.

No, he never claims you killed him if you have his gear. He only says :
"You there! I recognize you! You are the scoundrel that attacked me for no good reason near Baldur's Gate and made off with my equipment!"

And even then he won't automatically attack you. He says:
"Do not worry, Cattie-Brie, I did not bring you here to join me in vengeance... though this <PRO_RACE> may deserve such. I came seeking a simple answer."

You can still talk your way out of it if you want to.
And the fight can be quite hard, because it is a surprise encounter with no time to prepare, and if you have Keldorn, Jaheira, or Mazzy with you, they won't fight Drizzt.

That one is correct. And remember that you CAN NOT have his gear in BG2 unless you cheat since items do not carry over either (except 3).

Also, there is no one else other than him that mentions this event.

Also also, I googled it after gnarbrag's statement and there are lots of wrong information online for BG2 about this situation like "Drizzt says he came back from death to take his vengeance", "Drizzt appears as soon as you re-gather his scimitars.." etc which are quite impossible unless it is a modded game. These people must have quite the imagination.

I suppose that depends on whether you consider, dropping your gear on the floor at the start of BG2, and then picking it up later to be cheating.

Malchor Harpells will come and take Drizzt's gear off you if you have it.
If you try the drop it on the ground trick with him, he will come back later.
If he has to come back a third time, he will imprison you and your whole team, and it's game over.

That's not possible in the EEs.

Him being alive again isn't very noteworthy. He has multiple friends powerful enough to see that he gets raised from the dead.
