As was pointed out in a topic I made some time ago (about minimum stat playthroughs), there is one flaw in the original Baldur's Gate that makes the game impossible for certain character builds: At the end of the Prologue, there will be an event in which you get hit by a spell, which does a small amount of damage. If your HP is too low, that spell will kill you, ending the game. This makes it impossible to play through as a Mage with 3 Constitution, for example.

My two questions are:
1. Does this still happen in the Enhanced Edition?
2. If it still happens, will turning on Story Mode before the cutscene allow you to survive it, and continue the game as normal?

You would gimp your already low HP gain per level by -1 and your fatigue would increase by +1 every single in-game hour. I'm all for playing less than heroic characters, but that's just ridiculous. Nobody does that.

It may be true that nobody sane does that, but there may be not-so-sane players who will actually attempt to play such absurd characters. Ideally, it should at least be theoretically possible to beat the game with such a character, but that little bit of damage the game forces you to take makes it impossible (even if you were somehow able to make TAS tools work with this game).

Then there are players like me, who like knowing how the game handles edge cases like this (but I don't have the EE and don't plan on getting it, so I can't test this myself).

(I didn't know about fatigue for low Con; is there anywhere that is documented?)

(Also, you made a mistake: According to the Baldur's Gate Wikia, having 3 Constitution actually gets you -2 HP per level, not -1.)

I did not make a mistake. You made a fundamental mistake, though, by going to Wikia for your information. CON 1 gets you -3, CON 2 gets you -2, CON 3 to CON 6 gets you -1.

NB: I've been trying to post a link but the forum is not cooperating and screwing it up.

Ok, I fired up EE and here's your answer: the minimum requirements for an elf (-1 CON) mage do not allow for 3 CON.

Minimum requirements:

STR 3
DEX 7
CON 6
INT 9
WIS 3
CHA 8

What about a human mage?

Also, could you please answer my original question?

The requirements are the same. I chose elf purely because of the -1 to CON.

I just did.
The manual (both original and EE versions) list CON 3 as giving -2 HP. The latest version of the EE game itself only gives a -1 penalty for CON 3. Elves get -1 to CON, but they have a minimum CON score of 6. So, the lowest starting HP a character can have in the current EE version is 2 (a human mage with CON 3).

I rolled a 3 CON human mage and made a b-line for Gorion, saved, and played through the cutscene several times. During the attack, my character always takes two hits from the assassins. The first attack always causes a single point of damage. The second appears to be only for show, as my character always reacts like he is hit but there is never any actual damage inflicted.

So it would appear that it is not possible to be killed during the assassin attack in the EE by rolling a rediculously underpowered character.

Has Beamdog ever addressed any flaws? They seem to just add new ones with each patch.

Which might explain why they have stopped patching the games now, come to think of it.
