I am not wild about the new content in Enhanced Editions, so I managed my expectations low.

I have to say I am much more positive about SoD than I thought I would be. I like it!

Getting old friends back with their original voices - Minsc, Imo, Viconia - alone would be worth it, but they even got the original narrator guy.

As said, I think some narrative ideas are pretty brilliant, like introducing the main protagonist in this title - whose voice acting I've always loved, and who is a very compelling character.

I know I have to play this once specifically to bring Edwin along - bit hard for my kindly hero, but thank goodness for negative rep companions!

If anyone liked BG, this extends that gaming joy. Would recommend for BG fans.

I grew up watching every iteration of Star Trek. Until JJ Abram's version of Star Trek which is an abomination. He is much more suited for Star Wars. However, those few words are all I ever said on the subject. I never went to a trekkie forum and made it my life's mission to get everyone to start hating Star Trek.

I also had the opportunity to watch the once great UO slide into obscurity because of decisions EA has made.

This stuff happens all the time. All fiction is fan faction. It's not real. So what if someone has an agenda. Be an adult and don't let it affect you.

I'm so thankful I matured (slightly) since I first played BG.

Hickory: I have finished SoD, and I can say that compared to the previous EE versions, it is a vastly superior product, though the writing leaves a lot to be desired in places. There are two specific issues in the game (not this current political bullshit) that made me angry (that's not an easy thing to do), but I will not say what they are because of major spoilers. Only two games have ever had this (anger) effect on me, Mass Effect 3 and Siege of Dragonspear.
Hickory, you've helped me out a lot for different games on these forums so I respect your opinion.

I just picked up the EE's of both BG's and ID during that auction sale, partly because I saw DS was coming and would only work with it, but also because in general EE's usually just update graphics a bit and maybe add bonus things to a game (like director's commentary, etc).

1)What is different in BG's EE's that makes it worse than the originals? (other than not being able to use tutu - I was looking forward to carrying over an evil party but oh well ...) Was stuff added or content dumbed down? Serious question. Because if so I may get the originals also (at least I got the EE's on a pretty good sale).

2)It's funny you bring up the ME series ... I have them but haven't played them yet - 2 and 3 apparently have controller support while 1 does not. There is a mod for it but I couldn't make it work. Fun games to play? (other than the ending of 3 you mentioned.)

And thanks for your input on DS - based on the reviews on the game page I wasn't going to even think about getting it, but your comment makes it sound worth it. Honestly, I don't care about some SJW stuff as long as it is fun to play - I'm an adult, SJW stuff only affects kids, and I'd expect only a small percentage of kids actually play these old games - they just want the newest PS4 or XBone graphicky games.

Funny, I grew up watching Star Trek and Star Wars - his Star Trek movies are much better movies (though they're not "true Star Trek") than his abomination of a Star Wars movie. I honestly have no desire to ever see another Star Wars movie after seeing The Force Awakens.

Fallout.

Loved 1 and 2, favorite games of all time. Was so excited when I heard Bethesda was going to make a 3 and continue the franchise I loved. After all, they also made other favorites of mine, the Elder Scrolls games. What could go wrong, I thought.

Well I was wrong. I can't stand any of the new Fallout titles and was pissed. But I just didn't buy them and considered the series over at 2 instead of writing long arguments trying to sway others from buying them because of my own tastes. I recognize that other people love the newer Fallout games, good for them. It does still irk me when someone says Fallout 3 is their favorite game though (but I'm aware it's mostly coming from a younger generation that never played the originals).

Does me saying that I consider Fallout 1 the best of the series, followed by New Vegas and Fallout 3 and placing Fallout 2 as one of the worst games of the series make your head explode? :-P

But like I said, mostly. I get that everyone has their own tastes. To each their own.

I'm surprised you consider 2 the worst though, after Tactics and that BoS game for PS2 (I never played the BoS game - just heard it wasn't even an RPG and from what little I saw it looked terrible).

First of all what's wrong about writing an opinion post. That's what the forum is for, isn't it. You don't want to read the given post then don't. Nobody forces you to do so.

Now, the issue here is a bit more convoluted. There are gamers who raised valid concerns about the game. In response the developer tries to affect the scores posted online. Moreover, the developer says that gamers who criticize the game are part of a conspiracy and tries to divert the criticism of their product into LGBT issue.

This is of great concern to me. I was not sure whether to purchase this game or not. I didn't like previous EE versions and I very much was looking forward to reading honest reviews. The approach that the developer is employing (blocking reviews, spinning the criticism into PC territory) should be rightfully criticized.

Well I actually really enjoyed both Fallout 2 and Tactics, so me saying they're worst of the series is not a bad thing. Never played the PS2 BoS either tho and from what I keep reading, it's probably best forgotten.

Anyway, Fallout 1 was a thing of beauty. A gorgeous, thematically consistent thing of beauty - and that's what I loved about it the most. The fairly serious tone with hints of dark humor, the theme of venturing into the unknown, with perfect pacing, I could just rave on about the game. But then I played Fallout 2 and it sort of felt ... All over the place. Each major location felt like its own, separate game, not quite meshing together to form a whole. The consistency was gone, and the tone was made a lot lighter. To me, it no longer felt like a universe to be explored, it felt like a theme park, with exploring the map being me merely changing rides. Additionally, I felt like the game was somewhat padded, a lot more lengthy than what its content could carry. I was ... Extremely underwhelmed, and since I quite simply feel like F1 does the same things F2 but better, I always end up replaying Fallout 1 and only getting a bit into F2 before giving up on it.

I guess that's why I prefer the third game and New Vegas after all - To me, Fallout 1 feels like a game strictly better than F2, whereas F3 and New Vegas offer significantly different experiences.

Mostly, the added content. It is absolutely abysmal. Shockingly amateurish. I've seen mods with far better content, and the voice acting is simply horrendous. Next in line of my dislikes is the UI. It is awful. The designers have absolutely no idea about clarity, and I take exception that it is called an 'Enhanced' edition. It is not.

Absolutely fun games, especially the first one. Each version (1, 2 and 3) have their issues and strengths. There is only one way, as always, to find out if you like them, and that's to take everything you hear/read about them (this post included), and play them for yourself.

No problem. SoD is definitely worth playing... once: I can't see any re-playability in it, and that's a shame.

Yeah, I get that. I replayed both 1 and 2 tons of times. And I actually did like New Vegas a bit (I played it to the end twice, on 2 of the three sides you can take) but it wasn't even in the same ballpark as 1 and 2 for me. Honestly, it was mostly because they changed the leveling system, isometric view, and battle system of 1 and 2. Those were very fun elements of those games. I tried 3 when it came out, hated that they used an Elder Scrolls engine for it (it works great for TES games, but felt completely wrong for Fallout) but trudged along anyway - until I hit level 20 doing all side quests, stopped getting xp and thought my game glitched - only to find out they capped it that way. I had wasted all my perks on lesser things thinking I'd get the ones I really wanted later. Took that game back immediately. I liked (A LOT) though that I came across Harold as a tree ... a nice throwback. I tried 4 recently and hated it more than 3 lol. I made it just past the 1st mission and then all of a sudden I have to build a community - I hate sims games (like that) and games with an overwhelming amount of crafting. Oh well, I guess that's a big part of what people like in games these days. I won't play another though, 4 shattered any hope I had :)

I've just remembered a great thing that will speak greatly against Beamdog's and A. Scott's lunatic rampages with proffesional victim card and the fallacy "SoD is being trashed because of white cis male hatred conspiracy".

In BG2 (I played it in 2004, so quite a time ago) you can take with you Edwin (a conjurer if I recall correctly) that has a subplot of turning trans with magic. Oh boy, we all remember the outrage and the hatred BG2 received for implementing a transsexual themes into the game, don't we. BG2 is trashed ever since.

I will leave it just for confirmation that the problem are not the themes themselves, but their implementation. Wheras Edwin is a fleshed out character with some depth and real, unforced reactions from the world and the player, Mizhena is just a poorly written token used as a medium to transfer an obvious agenda.

I'm a huge fan of BG series so I'm devastated that this is doing so badly, can see a more mature views here so I have a few questions...

1. To me, Baldur's Gate was about the RP side of it, the combat is fun if you don't know how it works but once you sussed it out or even play a few western RPG's and understand what kiting and CC is Baldurs Gate can be summed up as a huge DPS race with CC, have they changed this at all?

2. Does the game offer me enough to RP a character who is being thrown in the deep end and doesn't really like all of the attention their getting? Or is my character going to be forced down a narrative? I always felt Baldurs Gate was your origin story and ToB was the big epic finale, this was one of the big worries I had with trailer.

3. I've seen a few memes, the old games had these but they were just easter eggs, in the old games you rarely got the joke lines from characters unless you kept clicking on them for example.

4. Can you opt out of the new characters? I've tried their new party members and...they're ok. They feel like mods as the audio quality was to good, Baldurs gate has a very timeless tone to it, I also felt the characters were very...modern. I recently got into an argument with Neera and I had very little control other than "..." or "Fine"

My fear is this is just a £20 quest mod that tries to hard or too little and ruins the cannon.

In other words. What's better. The Baldurs Gate 2 intro or the new story?
