I have old physical copies of the first two baldurs gate games with both the expansions, but can not get at least the first game to boot. When I try to run the game it says
"An assertion failed in D:\Dev\chitin\chVideo.cpp
at line number 4216
Programmer says: No valid video modes supported."

I have tried reinstalling the game in different folders and all the compatibility settings. I have scrounged through the depths of the internet for help, but have not found any.

I'm using windows 11 with a ryzen 3 3600 and a gtx 1650 super.

Any help will appreciated.

Edit:
I gave up on the first game and tried the second one. It booted natively and I am mostly happy now.

Err ... you may not have a D: drive, but the developer who wrote the program did.

This is a sourcecode reference, as to where the assertion failed. Obviously we dont have the source code.

It seems like you have the original version, not the EEs, and you havent patched it for higher resolutions either, so a modern graphics card doesnt offer the low non-wide resolutions that BG was written for.
This message means that the best resolution the game can use is worse than the worst resolution your monitor can support. For example, it might want to run in 800x600 or smaller, and you cannot set below 1024x768. Possible fixes:

- Change your graphics driver to allow a lower resolution. This may or may not be possible, depending on your hardware and driver.
- Install a mod that adds widescreen support. https://www.gibberlings3.net/mods/tools/widescreen/ seems to claim to work for this, but I have never used it.
- Run the game in windowed mode, if the game supports this.
- Use the Enhanced Editions, which natively support modern high resolution displays.
- Consider an Internet search for "Baldur's Gate" widescreen, which leads to many questions along the same line as yours. Some of the responses might be helpful. That is how I found the gibberlings3 link. I did not look further for whether other posts were useful.

gibberlings3 is still active as a forum and really your best option for very old builds of the game but frankly Windows 11 doesn't like games of this age so updating to EE or sidegrading to Windows 10 are your best two options

The problem here is the user cannot play the game, so he cannot win any prizes, stupid or otherwise.

Reporting the exact error the game produced is good practice, and far too many people fail at that basic step, so it is good to see that the user showed us the full error. Similarly, most people are very bad about not providing us information that may be relevant, so it is better for them to provide details like this, even when the detail is ultimately irrelevant, than to omit it on the assumption that it is probably not necessary. For someone unfamiliar with programs that report errors this way, it's not unreasonable to think that they should mention that their computer lacks the path cited.

Please beware that osm shows up in many threads where a user seeks any technical help, seemingly for the sole purpose of insulting the person for not solving the problem on his own. Do not be discouraged by osm's abuse.
Since this seems like a video mode issue, dgVoodoo2 might be helpful here. This is a link to a post of someone explaining how to run original Baldur's Gate on modern operating system/hardware:

I think I remember you saying something helpful in a linux thread once a long time ago. Other than that it's been all vitriol and scorn. You must have been raised in a very stressful situation. Sorry about that.

I think everyone should know that there is a good source port for the classic versions: https://gemrb.org/

And for other Infinity Engine games. Maybe it be interesting to try this. =)
