Portraits folder is
..\Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition\Portraits\

Read the topic a little closer. I already knew the location of the portraits.

Is the color depth right? The game is really picky about this sort of thing. The color depth for portraits has to be 24 bit, so even if the size and format are perfect that could cause problems with them displaying properly.
