Why does everyone seem to hate 4E? I personally thought it was better then 3 and 3.5E (though I never had a chance to play any earlier editions on table top). In 4E, fighters actually can do interesting things instead of just swing your sword every turn.

Well I can't speak for the others, but I don't really know a thing about the 4th Ed, and I don't care to find out. The thing is, I've now spent serious money on books from both the second and third editions, and right now I feel like Wizards has given up on both. I did not think they had to be scrapped, but the original authors did, so it is apparent that I have more respect for their works than they do. Or is it that they want to make more money? Either way I'm not impressed. At this point I am boycotting both the 3rd and 4th editions, and have gone back to AD&D 2nd Ed out of a combination of protest and nostalgia.

On topic, I am really hopeful for this project. So far all the info shared by Trent Oster points towards this being a dream come true. New content for my favorite games, made by the original authors? Sign me up, please!

I'm not crazy about it only being available through Beamdog's client, but I guess I'll see how that is when I get there.
I think I'm just naturally a bit leery and cynical about this kind of thing. I don't mean to be pessimistic, as I would really love a new game in the BG style.

I also just wanted to point out that the old Gold Box games like Pool of Radiance and Azure Bonds (which helped get me into RPGs in the first place) get no love these days. I miss those.
I think what got me into RPG's was the Wizardry series from Sir-Tech, anyone ever played those? Wizardry 7: Crusades of the Dark Savant specifically. Most powerful character in the game? Fairy ninja. LOL. Too bad the company went bankrupt.

Luckily Blizzard, Bethesda and BioWare, all quite influential on my formative years, are still going strong.

I've never played tabletop, so I have no experience with 4E. I just heard about the WoWification of it. That said, I didn't care for 3 or 3.5 the times I played them (IWD2, NWN, NWN2). Too many skills, feats, special classes, etc. I can see it is probably good for tabletop, but for a cRPG it seemed really distracting.
As much as I have enjoyed D&D 4E around the tabletop, I don't think it would fit the whole Baldur's Gate feel very well at all, and neither would a conversion to 3.X's ruleset. To me, Baldur's Gate has always been and always will be a 2e AD&D adventure- I just can't imagine it any other way.

Pertaining to Enhanced Edition in general, I'm interested in how much of an overhaul Beamdog will be giving the series, as there have already been modders who have given the original Baldur's Gate the capability of being played at higher resolutions (or being able to play BG1 in BG2's updated engine) as well as adding in missing content (Unfinished Business). Hopefully we'll see some impressive stuff, if not... I've always got my GoG copy.
Well, the "Enhanced Edition" seems to be Baldur's Gate with a widescreen patch. Judging from the screenshots nothing has changed: http://www.baldursgate.com/news/2012/03/21/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-for-ipad-3/

Yeah, I was hoping for a revised GUI that takes less space on the screen (ala Icewind Dale II). Still, having new content may more than make up for the lack of a new GUI.

Thankfully they are not the real EE screenshots. First time I saw them I was hoping they were just a mock up for testing purposes. The twitter feed confirms it.

Trent Oster: "I can verify the #bgee iPad screens do not show all the graphical enhancements." Also: "The UI for #bgee will change for all platforms. We have a lot of resolutions/ aspect ratios to support."

That is great news! Thanks for the heads up.
This new venture has no promise. Seriously who the fuck cares if baldurs gate is released for a new platform. The game is played on pc and can be played on mac if given an emulator. There is no reason anyone wants to play it on an ipad because your almost completely better off playing on a pc laptop.

1 new adventure/1 new npc?

Are you joking, if they were to do anything about the game, start with the engine. They would take it to the icewind dale 2 engine so that feats can be used, therefore giving more replayability. Other than that, there's not much they can do to make this game any different. Such a waste of time

Maybe the place I work at has a younger demographics (I'm prolly one of the oldest guys there) and is more progressive. A lot of my colleagues no longer carry a laptop with them. They have iPad. They all play games on their iPad.

But seriously, tablets have already killed netbooks and are in the process of gradually replacing laptops, in case you haven't been paying attention.

Have they actually stated that they are only adding 1 new adventure and 1 new NPC? Also, from what I read they ARE enhancing the engine, albeit by building onto the existing one. The iPad thing is a minor point, it's more of a bonus than anything.
I just read what the site says. It stated that they are adding 1 new quest and 1 new npc. From what they said about new engine, they are probably just talking about porting to iPad. Either way it really doesn't matter, baldurs gate was fun while it lasted. I still think it beats any of the crap bioware puts out nowadays tho.

I completely understand where your coming from. That makes sense. However, I'm thinking of something that affects everyone. If they make this for iPad users, it will be for iPad users only. I doubt it will affect everyone (pc users). In my opinion, the game needs a 3rd or newer edition in its engine in order for it to really be called an 'enhanced' edition. You can't just add a few things that don't help larger scale. Id rather they enhance the game drastically.

As it stands, i would rather they not release anything at all. The games are fine as is.

We will see, I'm certain it won't be the travesty you're imagining. If it is, we can just keep playing what we have.
