Is anyone else running into issues where companions just randomly stop following?

Right now, the only way I can keep my party moving is if Gale is the leader. If I try to control the party with anyone but him, Gale just stands wherever we are and doesn't move.

Is there some random AI setting that I may have toggled, or is this a bug?

Is this on a new game/save file?

Mine still downloading, but you might want to make sure no auto-save was loaded and that the files are not corrupted.

Last update I had to redownload the new version because some old version files were still there causing some really weird bugs.

Here's the instruction link for profile issues, that is, from the official forum: https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=818221#Post818221

And the technical issues thread for this (yours is not there): https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=818944#Post818944

Yeah... I started a new game with a bard after the patch downloaded.

It's really odd. I ditched him at the came then had him re-join, and the problem persists. It seems to be JUST Gail, as if I turned off his AI or something.
Fresh download of the entire game and yes stealth seems to break group follow... animation timing is out of sync at times and cutscenes seem a little jarring, especially when transitioning back to the normal game.
Gale can't follow well in stealth because he is shit at it... to answer your first question, no its not happening [outside of stealth] to me on W10 laptop & desktop

how much Ram has your system got out of interest?
Where do you get Patch 8?
I do not see that when looking at the download files here at GOG.

Update: I guess I was just confused since the changelog had not been updated. It appears like version 4.1.1.1695932 that is available for download is patch 8.

the current build for Windows on Gog is V4.1.1.1702531
see image, this is the build that is fully patched with the extra hotfix and the UI shows it under your map in game at the top right

Mac users are out of luck as allways, they should get it next month and people on Windows that use the offline installers get different criptic patch notes but still show the same build under their map

Yes - buggy. First it was Shadowheart in the Crypt - reported it to Larian. I had to back up and reload and earlier save to get rid of it.

Now it's Gale in the Blighted Village.

In both I did go stealth with my character so that's a possible connection to a bug.
try going the camp and rest

there is a known bug that causes characters to get stuck in conversation [see image]

if you get this bug you must restart from an early save... its game breaking

Three bugs I have encountered so far:

Full rest using certain food items (fish?) ill cause a crash. Safest to stick to the "Camp Supplies".

Saving after Gale learns a spell causes a crash.

Switching team members when not in the Main Camp causes them to not be available when you then go to the main camp. Case in point: I switched members by going to the camp in the Owlbear Cave and when I later went to the Main Camp from the surface they were not there. I went back to the Owlbear Cave and access the camp from there and they were available there.

This is a VERY messy patch!

Yes it becomes quite irritating and does not get better
Today's Hotfix seems to have fixed the bugs I was having.
it doesn't fix the stuck in talk bug and swapping characters at different camps still has some issues but at least we can long rest again

It took some finagling, but I got all 5 back in the main camp. I dropped off the three attached to me at the main camp, then went back underground and grabbed Laezel and Astarion and was able to deposit them at Main Camp too.

Sorry. Business travel.

The only thing limited in my system is the GPU. 32Gb RAM, 10-core i9-10850K. The game doesn't come close to touching the limits.

I did go to camp and rest. I also went to camp, swapped him out, rested, swapped him back in.

When he's the group leader, everyone follows him. When he's not, though, he just stands there like an idiot.

Is that the stuck in convo bug? I can still control him, so that would lead me to believe he's not in convo.

All that said - my question is answered. I thought maybe the new patch introduced a feature where you could turn off autofollow (without disconnecting someone from the group)... or maybe turn off AI or something, and I just couldn't find it. Sounds like that's not the case.

For this run, I'll just ditch the fool at camp; it's not worth reloading.
