I'd been playing fine with the latest patch until early last week when the game started crashing to desktop as soon as it got past the ~55% mark on the loading screen.

I've tried all of the various workarounds I've found, and even done a clean install of Windows and the game and it's still doing the same thing - anyone got any ideas?

Thanks :)
I remember the last time I did a clean install of windows for a game and it was not worth it at all. I spent more time installing/updating/all my programs and re-doing all my settings, than playing that game.

Are you playing the game with GOG Galaxy or Offline installer? Are you on Win10 or 11?
Did you try deleting Galaxy64.dll? in the bin folder. What type of drive is Windows / Game installed on? same drive/different drive? Does this happen to other games?

Installed via galaxy on win 11, all on same NVME drive, no other games affected.

Won't launch at all if Galaxy64.dll is removed, but I renamed it and put it back and then it loaded up once using the vulkan executable, so I quit to add my saves back in and now it's failing again the same as before
Try loading the game without GoG Galaxy, by launching the game directly from the .exe (try both dx11 and vulkan) in the bin folder. I see you tried to run the game without your save files. (that's a good idea, try doing that again). If you haven't already.

I'm going to assume you are on patch7 of the game. Did you use mods during patch6 of the game? Mod items are saved to the save game files. If mods are removed but the items the mod alters is still on your character(s) it will cause issues.

But you said it was working fine before so.... hmm...

Think I've found a workaround:

- Rename galaxy 64.dll and load bg3.exe, it'll give an error that the dll is missing and close
- Rename the dll back again and load bg3.exe and it'll load as normal

Seems ludicrous to me that this is working at all, and obviously no idea if it's a permanent fix, but it seems to be working so far

Yea, it is not idea at all. Did you try loading without Galaxy? If you un-plug your pc from the internet, will the game still crash? In the past with Galaxy there was an issue with it trying to connect to GOG services causing loading issues (not crashing, this was Cyberpunk 2077).
Tried loading with Galaxy closed, no difference.

The DLL renaming workaround is not working now as well, so that's disappointing

ok.

This might not do anything but did you install a new program, update any existing programs, drivers, or did windows do an auto-update around the time you started having issues? Audio drivers? Video drivers? etc.

I know you clean installed windows, but you could try clearing the cache folders for Baldur's Gate 3. I've never done this myself so, google for more details. Maybe something is corrupt there?

I've tried deleting everything from AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\LevelCache a few times and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

From the previous install, there may have been an update at the time but nothing that I've actively done anyway. Seemingly nothing since the clean install, and definitely nothing between it working ok a couple of times over the weekend.

Stumped again I guess

Any change these last few days? I'm scratching my head about this one...
One thing I forgot to ask is have you tried downgrading the game to patch6? The downside is your patch7 save games will not work, you will have to go back to the last game saved under patch6.

I've been distracted with Astro Bot this last week so I've not really bothered again, but I tried it again last night and it's still crashing as usual.

Not tried a previous patch yet, but I might give that a go over the weekend.

I'll be honest, Astro Bot turned out to be a very fun game. I would be playing it too vs. trouble shooting a game that keeps breaking.
