I have not bought this game yet, but intend to so in the future.

I would like to know if anyone here knows how this game will handle it when I by this game on Steam and my friend on GOG. Can we play together? If so, how?

And is there a way to use Steam Workshop mods with the GoG version or do I need to rely on Nexus for this?

yes it works and to play against anyone you have to make a Larian account

if you just play solo the Larian account isn't needed but can still be used

How does one invite someone to his game lobby? Old school connecting via Direct-IP and Port Forwarding?
the lobby system = you make a mulitiplayer game with spare places, that generates a one off code that you send to whom ever and they use the code to find you in order to join

if you goto youtube there are lots of examples and yes it can have issues because people haven't allowed BG3 a port in their firewall but it does work
