themazingness: It would be cool if I'm wrong, but I don't see GoG accommodating a Steam key. They are in direct competition, unlike say Itch.io which had little competition so some devs have Steam keys with purchase.

I think you're more likely to see success via Atari or Digital Eclipse themselves. Either way, I'd like to know the outcome.
Regarding your point about 'competition' between Steam and GOG, if the developer accommodated a key.

Steam provides keys to developers as a free service. The profits of these keys goes 100% to the developer:

What I think gog should do regarding this situation is add this game to the preservation program considering these are old Atari titles and commandeer the game. Update it themselves. Take the files Atari and Digital Eclipse uploaded to steam and add them to the gog version by force. A "You refuse to update the game yourselves Atari/Digital Eclipse so we(gog) will do it for you to keep the game up to date.

They couldn't do the later part dop to legal reasons

vampirosuk: I have contacted Atari and politely requested they provide a Steam key for the 'Expanded Edition' of Atari 50 - which contains both DLC timelines.
Upon submission of the form on Atari's 'Contact Us' webpage, you will receive an automated email reply.
A screenshot of the GOG order page for Atari 50 can then be attached.

I will update this forum if / once I receive a response.

I have also contacted GOG support with a proposed solution going forward. This is my message:

[i]Hi,

Regarding Atari 50, sold on the GOG store, the publisher Atari has announced via Discord they will not be providing updates / DLC for the GOG and VCS versions.

Atari has also announced on Discord, that they will be providing free codes / keys to VCS owners who have purchased the base game Atari 50 - on the platform of their choice, which also includes Steam.

As there is no technical solution to this issue, which the publisher claims is the reason for the absence of a GOG / VCS release for the DLC, I would like to propose a solution for both current owners of the GOG version of Atari 50, and potential future customers of the GOG version.

I would like to request that GOG contact the publisher Atari, and arrange that any current owners of GOG Atari 50, can contact GOG customer support - this information would be provided by a bold disclaimer on the product page - at the top of the description - that current owners can contact GOG support for (at least) a Steam key - provided to GOG by the publisher. [current owners will also be notified via email from GOG of this]
This key would contain the product 'Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration - Expanded Edition' - which contains all updates and both DLC packs.

Next to this same disclaimer of the product description, would also be a notice in bold, that 'Customers who purchase Atari 50, will also receive a Steam key with their purchase' (located in their receipt / library)
This would still encourage customers - who wish to retain the need for ownership - to purchase Atari 50 on the GOG store.

This positive and constructive gesture would go some way towards restoring good faith with regards to GOG customers towards Atari, and the GOG store itself.

This is a win-win solution for all parties.

care to give some screenshots/image captures of the Discord claim?

BanditKeith2: care to give some screenshots/image captures of the Discord claim?
Easily searchable information on both Discord announcements (ending of support / free codes) - on YouTube, Reddit and on the GOG forums.

One you should not blindly trust youtube or reddit and 2 gog forums is not the source info ..where as Discord can be trusted when a official server true but you brought up the matter so you should iether have screencaped/screenshot the matter or literally linked to the Atari Discord

The onus is not on me to 'prove' anything. If you don't 'trust' the information presented in front of your own two eyes, like 'screenshots' you asked me for - or YouTube videos which literally record the Discord post itself, then why don't you go to all the big effort of literally signing up to Discord to see for yourself?

Oh, and be sure to drop us a screenshot / link while you're there, so we can all see it's the 'official' server.

It is when you claim it as an official news on the game itself... thats how its been done on anything sense the internet has become the central hub for everything rather then legacy media and print .. Thus the as you put standard on you to prove what you claim via screenshots or links to the source, That or a link to say a official youtube channel of a company or the like..

If you are unable to conduct research and discern between what's trustworthy / misleading sources being presented in front of you and reach reasoned conclusions on your own, well, I can't help you there.

The onus is on you - as the one disputing fact, with the word ‘claim’ - to prove me, prominent YouTubers (in faking videos?), their thousands of followers, the GOG forum members maintaining that specific forum, who have been registered on GOG for over a decade - I’m sure they will all welcome some rando newb, disputing already accepted and established facts about Atari’s announcements.

You're the only one who seems to be in denial that the ending of support / free codes from Atari is even a thing.
The rest of us, however, seem content to live within the confines of reality.

I don't see any such information on the Atari Club Discord neither by looking where it should be, nor by searching what should bring this up.

As I had tried to inform the previous poster, who was immediately dismissive of Reddit (you do know that publishers, such as Atari, have their own 'official' subreddit?).

As these announcements also concern VCS customers, regarding the ending of support / free codes - which we were discussing - you might want to check out the Atari VCS subreddit.

As I have previously stated, this long standing issue of missing updates, is also endemic of apparently uninformed consumers, who lack principles and seem content to keep rewarding this kind of neglective behaviour from publishers / stores.

As it seems, some users on this forum are either too lazy or inept to do their own research, which just reinforces my point, that users, who have even created this forum, are apparently oblivious to relevant announcements, where publishers tend to use Discord for this very purpose.

I do, however, recognize and applaud the principled approach of some users on here, who have taken a stance in refusing to purchase any more from said publishers. As Gabe Newell has said, piracy is a service problem, and this Atari case has demonstrated this.

I found the reddit post fine. Their discord channel is so disorganized and makes no sense.

What makes even less sense though is discontinuing support for VCS and GoG. What is so difficult about publishing here that made it worth the financial consequences of backing out? And VCS is their own product. Why discontinue updates there?
Of course, it doesn't look good for Atari in not being able to support their most loyal supporters, and VCS customers of Atari 50.

Ok, VCS owners were promised back in June last year that they would receive the DLC for free. Atari shouldn't have made promises they couldn't keep.
It's understandable, from a business perspective, prioritizing the release on the main platforms, but in doing so, have neglected customers of their own hardware.

This is speculation, but I believe sales of the DLC were not high enough, so it was simply not worth it for Atari to release it on GOG. GOG customers were considered not economically viable.

If we look at previous releases from Digital Eclipse, in how the Disney Collection was later repackaged to include the update. Yes, Atari is the publisher now, but a repeat of that release model would not look good.

If Atari did release the 'Expanded Edition ' instead on GOG, replacing the current base game, which would seem viable in not having to 'replatform' the DLC, then this would leave VCS customers as the sole exclusion. Even though Atari have tried damage control with the free keys. It still would be unavailable on their platform.

In other words, at the risk of alienating Atari's VCS userbase further, in not being able to provide them with the DLC - which could very well be a technical issue, GOG customers, partly because the financial return was possibly considered not worth it, but Atari couldn't very well provide GOG customers with the DLC, at the exclusion of VCS owners.
