Hey guys, I just got this game and find it quite enjoyable. However, using magic has me stumped. The game tells me to light the torch using the correct spell. One problem I have is there is no apparent way of telling which spell does what, it just seems to be guess and check. Second, out of the two spells I have, none of them seem to light the torch in the dark hallway. I hold ctrl and do the correct mouse movement, the name of the spell is said, and then I let go of ctrl, and nothing happens. I know lighting the torch is in no way necessary, but I would like to know how to correctly cast spells before continuing in the game. Thanks alot!

Hey, if you checkout just the magic section of this walkthrough

It explains in good detail how the magic system works. The runes in the game means a certain word and you need to create rune words to beable to cast spells.
"Runes also have "word meanings", or what they translate to in the normal
language. For example, if you combined "create fire" (Aam Yok), it would cast a
spell that creates fire. Fairly simple if you ask me."
I'm guessing your problem is you're confusing runes with spells, as it sounds like you're just drawing individual runes. At that point in the game, while you have two runes, you have only one spell, "ignite." Runes have to be used in combination (draw both of them, without letting go of ctrl).

Hi,
The spells and runes you have learned are stored on your book. Press F2 to bring up the magic section of your book. Spells are kept on the left, runes on the right.
The Ignite spell looks like a "4" sign. Move your cursor over that sign and you'll see the name of the spell (in this case - IGNITE), and the necessary runes combination you'll need to 'draw' in order to cast that spell (in this case you'll need to 'draw' the runes AAM + YOK). Above the book you'll also see an exact description of what the spell does.
Face the torch, press the 'Magic Mode' key (CTRL) , 'draw' the two runes in sucession using the mouse and finally release CTRL. That should do it.

Thanks guys, all of you helped a lot. I am enjoying the game quite a bit now.
This guide is for the PC version and seems to be more in-depth as well.
I've also had trouble getting into the game for this reason, but hope to give it another shot soon. Glad you're liking it. :)
Not solved for me.... sigh.
I understand how the system works and occasionally I actually get a spell to work, but it takes FOREVER to get the correct motion... It is TRULY MADDENING!!!!!
I do the left to right slash just fine, but the L shape with a half high right edge only works about one in 100 tries... After trying 10 minutes I got it to work once. Is there some trick to getting the motion right? I am going to delete this damn game if I it's this hard to imitate the manuever.
What am I not doing? I swear I know my shapes. AHHHHHHH!
*** UPDATE *** ok, doing better. If I keep them really small, like under an inch per stroke my error rate drops exponentially, from 1 in 100 to about 1 in 5. I sure do love the game!

I had this problem using a trackball, but use of a mouse solved it.
I can't even get the Ctrl key to bring up the Magic icon. Any ideas what to do now?
