Hey,

does anyone knows whether the game can be played with a (modern) joystick? keyboard is awful in this game ;)

thx!
As it even works with a Xbox 360 pad, i'd say it should work with just about anything. Just be prepared to use a program like JoyToKey to utilize all your joystick buttons. Schleichfahrt only supports up to four buttons natively.And don't forget to calibrate your joystick in the games options menu.

Short answer: I don't know.

Longer answer: It might, as DOSBox can use input devices. Some of GOG's DOSBox releases work with 360 controllers from 'out of the box' installations of the game, albeit not all buttons mapped (e.g. Wing Commander 1+2). I'd expect you will need to do some tweaking, though, to get it working. You might even need to use something like vJoy to map a modern controller/joystick to a virtual one and have the game read the virtual one (due to how old controllers/joysticks were DirectX and new ones are XInput).

I don't find the keyboard too bad in this game, actually. Managed to do a fair few missions but am stuck on this one where you have to take over a pirate control base. Done the first part of the mission fine many times, sneaking in through the back door to take out their gun turret control station, then heading to the base to join up with the ATL craft to protect their bomber. Thing is, after the initial wave of pirate scouts and a pirate bomber, the mission doesn't end, and no other pirates come near. There are some on the map but finding them is difficult and as the ATL craft don't follow you, you have no help in taking the pirates down when you do eventually find them. It is an optional mission, though, but I really don't want to have to skip it.
I'm actually playing the game with my TM Warthog HOTAS. Works like a charm.

:)
perfect :) thx!

There are many bugs in the triggers/win conditions of the original game, if you install the augmented mod 1.01 it fixes most/all of them.
Also playing with (CH) HOTAS here. Works great. Only issue is there's no analog throttle support. I'm playing with forward and backward thrust assigned to toe brakes, so I hold my right pedal down to go forward and hold left to reverse.

Edit the dosbox .conf, change:

[joystick]
swap34=true

Thanks, but there's not actually a solution here because the game simply doesn't support analog throttle. It's not a matter of axis assignment. The game only supports pitch and yaw analog control, a fact backed up by the manual.

I do actually have the Augmented Mod 1.01 installed. Wondering if that's what broke this mission. I used the level complete cheat to finish it once I'd protected the ATL bomber after the base was taken, rather than try to search out and take on single handedly the pirate bombers that don't come in to attack.
I completed that one without issue with the Augmented mod installed, but would not be surprised if scripting breaks occasionally and the mission completion trigger fails. I've had to play a few other missions twice due to scripting errors.

Well, I've tried it about 15 times, maybe more (as initially it made me stop playing the game for a time and I recently returned to it when it came to GOG) and every time I protect the ATL bomber after the pirate base is taken, but when no more pirate subs are in the immediate area (where the ATL subs patrol) the mission doesn't end as there are at least two other pirate bombers hiding around on the map and once I searched for an entire hour and didn't find them. On the occasions where I did find them I was facing them alone and just got blasted away.
