As it says in the title, I have a frame rate problem. The frame rate problem is rather weird though, sort of slowing/stalling then speeding repeatedly, like someone learning to drive a car and they press and let off the accelerator repeatedly causing a jerking motion. About the only way I know how to describe it. Thanks in advance for answers and solutions.

Also sound skipping seems to be a problem at some points, crap.

Found this: https://www.gog.com/forum/archimedean_dynasty/stuttering_soundmusic_and_falter_gameplay/post5

Mine is still slightly jittery, though that may be the effect of vsync being off. Still, i'd rather have a solution that allows me to use vsync.
I think this was already mentioned in another thread:
In the nglide-settings set vsync to OFF (nglide_config .exe can be found in the DOSBOX subfolder).

For me that did the job and the game runs smoothly now.
Ok - thx a lot - disabling vsync resolves my problem to :)
Have fun :)
I set vsync OFF in the nglide options and also reduced the resolution to 640x480 but it's still lagging. Any more advices?

Uh, how do you do that? I know how to edit the DOSBox config to run different exes, but there are several that read AD.EXE, AD2.EXE, AD3DFX.EXE (i'm assuming this is the 3Dfx version that's default), ADD4G.EXE and ADD4G2.EXE. I have no idea which one to run or which one is the best to run.

I don't have the game on GOG but I thought they would at least have provided configurations and shortcuts for it.
They did this for Carmageddon so why not for Archimedean Dynasty?

Anyway, I think AD2.EXE was the patched software version and AD.EXE the unpatched one, I don't recognize ADD4G2.EXE and AD3DFX.EXE is the 3dfx version.
So if there are no alternative configurations besides the 3dfx version you need to use notepad and edit one of the .conf files, usually the one with the word "single" in it, and change AD3DFX.EXE to AD2.EXE.

I find this a pretty poor release from GOG then, fluid 3dfx emulation in Dosbox requires a very fast CPU.

Yep, that fixed it. Software mode looks almost as good as 3Dfx mode for this game to be honest, I just hope we both chose the right exe. The only problem I had was getting the correct aspect ratio in opengl output. Editing the DOSBox config didn't work, but using the drop down menu in DOSBox Daum (Now gog decides to use this version of DOSBox?) does. Go figure.

Yeah, Carmageddon 3Dfx runs great for me, but this one's 3Dfx doesn't run quite as well.

Much thanks for your help. :)

Good you got it working, I played this game a few years back and I didn't use 3dfx for this reason and as a bonus I think the cockpits look better in software mode.

When I got AD running myself about 18 months ago I also had to use DOSBox Daum to get it working well with nGlide for 3DFX. I'd say that as GOG are providing the game with 3DFX enabled then this may be why they've had to use DOSBox Daum on this occasion (vanilla DOSBox hasn't been updated in a very long time so is missing a lot of the improvements of unofficial builds).

Thank you for the hint, I will try this out. I do have a fast CPU though (i7-4790K), this shouldn't be the problem.

edit: I can't post links but some sites mention this dosbox version for Archimedean Dynasty:

ykhwong DosBox

Ah, I see.

The only problem I have with this version is that it seems to want to conflict with the DOSBox config file settings in regards to the correct aspect ratio, though that could be because gog has two different config files for their AD setup. I eventually got it setup by setting the fullresolution= of both config files to original. Opengl output now works correctly too.
