I'm trying to add a custom portrait, but it's not working. I've followed the directions from other posts. My questions are: 1)Does the GOG version not allow custom portraits? 2) Is this a windows 7 problem?

1. Yes, it does. I have GOG version with custom portraits.
2, No, I have Windows 7 64bit.

Did you create the data\portrait\userport.mes file, and did you create the portraits, both in the correct format?
Hickory,
I did create the userport.mes and converted the images to the correct size bmp files. I created a portrait folder in the data folder. I followed the instructions from this post "for those having trouble creating custom portraits" (sorry it won't let me post links).

I can't for the life of me figure out why it didn't work. Thank you for your help though. I'm glad its not a windows 7 issue

Could you copy/paste the contents of your userport.mes file here, please? Also, please post the exact names and sizes of your saved images.
Hickory,
Thank you again for you help. The userport.mes file has only the following line in it
{1}{HUM5}

I have one file that is
HUM5.bmp
it is 64 x 64 pixels and 5kb

and I have another file that is
HUM5_b.bmp
it is 128 X128 pixels and 14kb

Ok, well here is my human male number 5:

{24}{HUM05}

Files are HUM05.bmp, HUM05_b.bmp, 5kb and 17 kb.

Note the zero (don't know if it's essential, but worth noting). Also, my large (128x128) images are 17 kb. You should check it again.
That seems to have fixed it. Thank you very much!

Cool. :)
ANY is also an acceptable race prefix which appears among all of them.
