Many years ago when Arcanum came out on CD, I bought it and was enjoying playing it until I hit the Isle of Despair. I needed a book or other item to complete some quest and did not have it. I can't even remember the quest. I remember reading my entire in-game journal trying to find a clue to what I missed and come up dry. Being unable to complete that quest made me to quit playing Arcanum for a long time. I am ready to go there on the GOG version, but still recall that I need that item and I still haven't a single clue in my journal as to what it is or where it is and do not want to repeat the blown quest. Does anyone know what it is I need, and where I can get it?

You don't actually NEED the book... if I remember correctly, it's just an optional quest. Or if it's not, there are other ways around it. I definitely didn't have the book but I was still able to finish the game without problems.

I'm sure someone else here remembers the details better.

The book for the ogre guard, right? I don't remember exactly where it is, but I believe it resides in one of the many barrels you find along the docks (in Ashbury I think, but I'm not 100% certain). This is a classic Arcanum side quest with absolutely no hints. There's no hint as to where it may be, and even if you find it there's no hint as to what it may be used for.

These are the kinds of things you learn by soloing the game with a thief.
SPOILERS AHEAD.

To successfully complete the Isle of Despair quest, you need to recover the special glasses from Thorvald. The first step is to get inside to speak with him. You can do this one of two ways (three, with Drog's patch):

1) Talk to the ogre guard, and bring him a specific book to read. (UniversalWolf is correct; it's in a locked barrel on the docks, which will require stealth and lockpicking skill so as not to alert the town guards.)

2) Have the guard direct you to the pit master, and win the first battle in the pit. (Other battles are optional, but should you choose to run the gauntlet, you earn the respect of everyone on the island.)

3) With the patch and sufficient Persuasion, talk to the ogre about his lousy childhood, and he will let you through.

Once inside, you can get the glasses from Thorvald one of three ways.

1) Talk him into giving them to you.

2) Talk him into leaving with you. (This requires sufficient Persuasion, and that you not be a gnome.)

3) Kill him, and find the necessary schematic in a book in one of his drawers. (This will require you to make your own pair, or pay the spectacle-maker in Ashbury 1000 gold to do so for you.)

As you can see by these examples, while the quests themselves may be unmarked, there's always more than one way to skin a cat in this game. Best of luck to you.

By the way, while you're on the Isle there are other optional quests you can do. None of them are necessary to the main quest, but they add in-game color and provide backstory (although you may not realize their full significance at the time). Remember that once you leave the Isle after speaking with Thorvald, you won't be able to come back.
In Arcanum, if you really, really don't know how to do something, you can always kill important people off to advance the story.

Actually, the only guy you have to not kill is the guy who takes you to the Isle of Despair. I think he is literally the only essential NPC to the entire game.
That's a good point, although the OP never said he couldn't advance the story. I assume he just got frustrated at not being able to complete that quest, but I could be wrong.

In any case, you don't need the book to get past the ogre.

That is correct. I was so frustrated that I couldn't complete the quest that I never finished it.
