Arcanum I am happy to say is a Gold product on the WineAPP Database for the CD version, It appears however, noone has a review for the GoG Download of it. I am seeking to do just that.
If anyone already has it working maybe you could share the info yourself with the WineApp database.

OS: Ubuntu 10.04
Wine ver: 1.3.8
Here is what i Have so far
What works?
Installation + hi res patch + Unofficial Patch + Hi res town maps
What doesn't?
The game starts but you are provided no curser at the menu screen, Since i can't get past that,
We will assume nothing.
What was tried?
Windows XP/98/95 |OSS Audio drivers | No Libraries | Emulated Desktop/No Emu Desktop | Under Graphics Tab: All check Box's selected/All minus Allow Pixel Shader|

All Input is welcome!

There used to be a small howto on getting Arcanum running on wine under the AppDB entry. That seems to have been deleted for some reason.

Anyway, I have reasonable success running Arcanum under wine with these settings:
1) Run winecfg, and create an entry for arcanum.exe under "Application settings" (click on the Add application button and navigate to arcanum.exe in the file picker)
2) With the arcanum.exe entry highlighted, click the "Graphics" tab and check the "Allow DirectX games to stop mouse leaving their window" and "Emulate a virtual desktop" (set it to 1024x768 for now).
3) run arcanum.exe with the -doublebuffer command line switch

The mouse will still be extremely flaky, sensitive and disappear at random, but you should be able to get it back by Alt-Tabbing. Until the Wine developers admit there are problems with their mouse handling code, this is the best you can expect.

I run Arcanum in Wine (1.3.10, but earlier worked too) with no problem. Use the switches -no3d -doublebuffer. No mouse problems or anything.

With Wine-1.3.11 the game should work again with hardware acceleration enabled (so you don't need to add the -no3d switch).

for me things work rather well with Crossover Games, with the exception that with the High-Res patch it's really quite slow (scrolling, characters movements...).

Do you have the same experience, or is there something to do to make things faster ? I have a Dual Core 1.6GHz and 1.5 GB Ram, it's for sure not a gamer' rig but it really should be able to run Arcanum at reasonable speed. Baldur's Gate is really OK with high-res too.

Sorry, it took me so long to update this. I now maintain for the Arcanum application on Wine APPDB. I have provided as much information as I could for my OS. Please feel free to try them and tweak as appropriate for your OS.

Edit for clarification.

Straight Wine 1.4.1/no tweaks: Audio perfect. Graphics bad, flickering/disappearing sprites and tearing.

With no3d/doublebuffer didn't work well for me. It fixed the graphics but screwed up the audio and made mouse lag horribly. Pretty much the same effect as launching the game with the Arcanum (Safe Mode) shortcut.

What worked on my system was the following.

Linux Mint 13
PulseAudio
Nvidia 400 series videocard Nvidia 295.40 drivers
Wine 1.4.1 Stable
UAP, HiRes Townmaps, HiRes patch.

WineTricks:
Install GDIplus if you don't already have it. WineTricks>default config>Add a Windows dll or component and follow the instructions.

WineTricks>default config>Change Settings:
ddr=gdi
orm=backbuffer

And everything works as well as it did. Note on the HiRes, scrolling can be annoying on widescreen resolutions, especially scrolling up. I believe it's part of the limitation on view distance. It's like the camera gets stuck sometime and you have fiddle with it(move down/left/right) to get it moving again. It was really annoying for me at 1600x900 so I dropped down some to 1440x900 and it's a little better. So you may want consider sticking with a 4:3 resolution.

Extras: I tried WorldEd and ScriptMonkey briefly and they seemed to be working. Didn't test them in any serious manner though.

MatuX's UnDAT works perfectly with WINE from the terminal. Just precede the UnDAT commands with wine i.e. $ wine undat arcanum4.dat

Out of curiosity, is the game the GOG version 1. and 2 is your Audio integrated?

Troubleshooting:
1.) Have your tried propriatary/non-propriatary drivers?
2.) Have you tried disabling extra features of the audio and running it in Sterio?
3.) When you installed all the 3rd party patches did you follow the instructions exactly, because I have no issue with scrolling with the High-def patch on a monitor 1920 X1200

I'd also like to point out that, I don't use any winetricks, whatever is default for winetricks is what I use. I don't own Linux Mint but if you have enough interest in this issue, I will install it and see if I can help.

Sorry for the confusion Demon002 I need to edit my post to make it more clear. Using the -no3d/doublebuffer didn't work for me. Adding GDI and changing the WineTricks settings as I posted works perfectly on my system, YMMV.

Left out using Nvidia 295.40 drivers.

The scrolling issue I suspect is related to the way the game limits your view distance/scrolling based on your characters perception stat. Seemed like with the widescreen I was hitting the limit on one edge or corner while moving and scrolling at the same time. Moving the camera a little bit one direction or another would free it up. I'll play with that more and maybe try the '-scrolldist:0'.

The offer of help is appreciated but I'm satisfied with the way it's working at the moment.

I had the issue of garbled graphics while scrolling.
The ddr part was sufficient for me. Anyway judging by the file winetricks downloads GDIplus seems to be a Win7even feature - can't see the need to install it for the game that supposed to run on XP at best.
Setting orm to backbuffer was also not needed in my case.
