Starting a new game, I picked up a character instead of building one up, Solomon Doone's the name, and I was wondering if the auto-scheme associated with the character was useful. Since I'm not so much of an RPG player, I thought leaving it that way would be fine, not having to spend my points on the 56 or else degres and colleges.

Solomon is supposed to be the son of necromancer, does that mean it's scheme tends to allocate points to necro/death magic, for example ? I don't get the picture.

If any of you FO & Arcanum experts could help me...

TL;DR Auto-scheme, good or not ?

My immediate thought was 'no, not worth it,' but it occurred to me I'm far too obsessive-compulsive to not take a direct, autocratic hand on this sort of thing. I honestly can't say.
I will say that the auto-leveling scheme of NPCs doesn't do you much good, which implies to me that the auto-leveling scheme of a lead PC probably isn't any good either.

JamRil: TL;DR Auto-scheme, good or not ?
I've never tried one, but they are included for exactly the reasons you give; i.e. not wanting to have to micromanage your character. I'm pretty sure that you can tailor them to work exactly the way you want, or to get an idea of how the default one will work. Try taking a look at your character screen and then checking out how the auto-leveling scheme will work.

The big downside to an auto-level scheme would be that it might prevent you from getting certain abilities or spells that you really want. If you're excited about a specific spell or tech item, or about using a certain type of weapon, it's probably more efficient to allocate points yourself, since you will need to first boost the prerequisite stat and then the skill itself. For example, to get a high-level tech schematic you will need to boost your Intelligence and also get all the lower-level tech schematics in that college. To get that tech as fast as possible you will want to make sure you allocate each point just so, whereas an auto scheme might spread your points out a little more.

Arcanum is the kind of game where you're going to want to try out different characters because the game reacts very differently depending on how you play and what you do, so I would say go ahead and try out the auto scheme and see how you like it. If you're not enjoying it, restart and try a new character. The most important thing is that you have fun!
Thanks ever so much for your quick answers ! I decided to set it on "No Scheme" since it's the only way to allocate points.

Apparently, the scheme "Solomon Doone" only allocates points to Magick (Since he is supposed to be some sort of necromancer). You would start with a +1 Melee and two spells "Harm" and "Protective Shield".
Playing devil's advocate, Harm is a nasty-good spell when you're a powerful magician. A bit of a game breaker, and a lot of fun besides.
