Well been playing this game the last few days, and i'll give my thoughts on it.

The game has a decent story, well animated (in a paper-doll like way) which does add to it's charm. Music is good, and voice acting (when present) is also good. Nice open world with minimal progression (no leveling, just gaining new music/forms).

However probably the largest annoyances with it, is the bosses. Each boss is good and unique and wonderful, but with no hints as to how to deal with them, and you do trial and error to figure out what you're suppose to be doing.

My two current bosses are a Jellyfish, and an Octopus. Although i can probably brute force how to beat them, when you die you backtrack to the last save rather than, oh, right before the battle was initiated. The long time of backtracking, especially charging light so you can see in pitch blackness is annoying :(

Being penalized progression for something i had no clues or hints or knowledge of how to fight something, isn't what i call good design, and i don't want to spend 5-10 minutes to re-travel to something that will kill me in 2 minutes just so i can try again.

It's this that will make me quit a game. Yes i could probably find an FAQ somewhere, but i shouldn't have to; Nor should bosses be heavily based on swapping forms with a change form system that is heavily imprecise and half the time doesn't read my button inputs making you have to swap again for the later stage.

So in summary: Big open world, is rather fun (most of the time), lots of form changing, no level progression, die and restart at last save, bosses are a pain most of the time and you'll almost definitely be restarting then. Got tired and quit.

Figuring these things out is part of the fun!

Also, there a *some* hints, and some general approaches that work well with bosses.
Like, whenever an eye or tongue sticks out of a boss, shoot it with all you've got!
And watch his routine - in which order he does things and when he becomes vulnerable, and devise your own routine during the battle accordingly.

This is the kind of boss battle game design that was common in old-school games, and I think Aquaria is deliberately a little "retro" in this sense. I think that's kinda cool, though I suppose it can be daunting for today's generation of gamers who aren't used to it... :P

Note that you can use recipes to make your life easier though. Since you can only carry 8 items of each ingredient at a time, you should continually turn lower ingredients into more powerful recipes as you explore. Then you'll have enough potent power-ups to get you through boss battles.

Are you sure you didn't miss some save-points? I don't think it ever took me that long to get from the nearest save-point to a boss battle.

You can switch forms much more easily and quickly using the number keys of your keyboard.

In fact, finishing the whole game using only the song wheel for form switching, is informally considered "expert mode"... ;)

Agreed it is fun figuring it out... if it wasn't for what i already mentioned.

I am using recipes, although it's usually healing items.

It might be closer to a ancient turtle but cycling through them all is also slow and annoying. Usually the first thing i seek in an area is a save spot, and unless i'm just really clueless about how to get around, then i'm having quite a few issues.

Very nice to learn (after i already quit the game). Considering i was heavily playing on a 360 Xbox controller, the number keys weren't exactly convenient or accessible. If it's mentioned in the help page, when i usually went to it it happily zoomed past everything to the bottom every time i opened it (for some reason...)
