Though sadly, it had a cliffhanger ending and never saw a sequel and richly deserved one, this is a truly great marker in gaming history. I played it initially on the Amiga, SNES, and Genesis, then later on the PC. I must have played the "spiritual" sequel, Flashback a dozen times across console and PC platforms as well. Called Out of the World in the states, this was one of the first puzzle-action side-scrollers, but also one of the first that told a mature story where you felt invested in the main characters. It was intense, poignant, and intelligent. Totally worth re-experiencing, or experiencing for the first time.
Then I have great news for you...Another World had a sequel. It was called "Heart of the Alien", and it was only released on the Sega Genesys/Megadrive.

It was not as good as Another World, but provided some closure to the original story.
Have fun!
Truly a great game, I bought it as soon as I saw the advertisement... I guess that I have to scrape my plans for the evening :P

actually Eric Chahi himself doesnt consider the sequal canon to his story. He deliberately wanted the open ending so we make our own conclusions as to what happened to Lester

True.
Nevertheless, it is still nice to see what "might" have happened :)

Eric Chahi wasn't directly involved in the making of the sequel. Actually, if you read Eric's work diary in his website, you'll see many of the fights he had with Interplay, even during the publishing of the original.
IMHO, the sequel is a good game, but not even close it can be compared to the original. Too cliché, shorter, no sense of "beginning-halfway-ending", no great moments... and the big polemic around Lester.
