Hello everyone, recently me and a friend got Anno 1701 and wanted to play over vpn/lan, but problem occurs when one of us hosts a game and other is unable to join, it only shows Wrong version error and that's it.

Doesn't matter if it's vpn or actual LAN, we both have same version of game, downloaded from GOG minutes apart, both run windows 10 64 bit, tried compatibility mode for xp sp3, tried reinstalling, running as administrator and stuff, always the same problem.

Any ideas in which direction to look for an answer, so far no ideas for making LAN work. Anyone else got it working to join network game by any means?

Thanks in advance.

Start it in Compatibility Mode with Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Anno 1701 (and some others) suffer from the problem that multiplayer games do not work correctly even for LAN games. The dreaded "Wrong Version" error is one of the symptoms.

One of the possible problems is that the game behaves very, very poorly when the computer has more than one network device/interface (for example when VPN or Hamachi is going to the used). To solve this one can bind the Anno process to a specific IP using the ForceBindIp (no links allowed for me, sorry) tool. First you need to find out the IP of the network device which you want to use, and then you start Anno like this:

ForceBindIP.exe $IP Anno1701AddOn.exe

With "$IP" to be replaced with the IP of the network device, obviously. So the whole command might look like this:

ForceBindIP.exe 201.168.1.5 Anno1701AddOn.exe

With this the LAN Lobby browser does still not work, but direct connections do.

I've just tested this with Anno 1701 (not History Edition) over VPN and it solved the "Wrong Version" error when someone tried to join. Additionally, this does work in WINE/Proton.

So there we go.
