Did some googling about performance in this game, I haven't tried it yet myself because of the performance issues but I found this: http://bit.ly/HghGKD

The last user says: "Nevermind, paydirt! I turned on compatability mode, Windows 98 / ME, and it runs smooth as butter. :D Moving around is a little awkward but I like the combat."

It was released in 2001 so XP should be the optimal OS for this game. Anyone tried Win98 compatibility mode?
Having the same problem. I've tried:
- changing compatibility (every posibile mode)
- re-installing to c:\Anachronox
- running installer/game/launcher as admin
- changing resolution
- processor affinity
- creating the Config.ini with fps set to 200

and a lot of combinations of the above, but the problem remains exactly the same.

Even tried using nVidia Inspector to set my graphics card drives to quake2, renaming anox.exe to quake2.exe and running it that way but the problem prevails (or I'm doing something wrong). Maybe this will work for someone else.
Why is one suppose to use 200FPS? That's feels quite excessive. Why not try 60FPS instead unless there's something about the quake 2 engine I'm missing? Perhaps 120FPS.
I am not sure why this works but I found using the GCT Setup tool to launch the game always gave me a stable framerate.

Whenever I launched directly from a shortcut or the .exe I found the framerate just plummeted.

I thought I would just add that as it seemed to work for me, maybe it will work for others having framerate issues.

What kind of framerates do you have? If you have a counter, please mention your best guess regarding both minimum, average and maximum and if it's not too much trouble your system's specs (GPU, RAM, CPU will do).

Having just quickly tested it, launching from the GCT Tool, I get a pretty much solid 50 fps (so not quite refresh rate at 60hz), peaking at around 55 fps, and as low as 49 fps, so not much change, overall pretty stable.

Launching straight EXE or shortcut, the framerate becomes really sporadic, ranging from anywhere between 3 fps and 50 fps, it never maintains a stable framerate.

And as I said before there is a noticible difference even without checking with a frame counter.

As you asked my specs are i5 2500k, 8gb of RAM and a 6950 (with 6970 unlock). So my hardware is more than capable.

Hmm, that's a strong and modern computer. I wonder how my Q9550, GTX470 and DDR2 4GB would do. I have plans on trying Anachronox to the summer and those performance rates are enough. Thanks. :)

Indeed, its a definite possibility I get a good frame rate through just brute force, but even then there is a most discernible difference (even without a frame counter) between launching via the EXE and the GCT Tool, at least for me, so its more than worth a try for anyone having issues.

Perhaps this is an AMD issue? has anyone else who has a phenom II tried to run it?

I just tested the game on my wife's computer which is running an Intel i7 and the game runs great. We have nearly identical hardware so this is almost certainly an AMD/Phenom issue.

Now i have the sad :(

Check processor affinity, The game uses only one core of your processor. You just have to press ctrl+shift+esc find anox.exe, right click and set affinity to use all the cores. If this doesn't work, I don't know what does.

Thanks mate, that solved the issue for me. Really strange though.

My work is done, glad I could help.

I have to set it to all cores or the sound goes all weird, cracking and popping and NOT playing AT ALL!!!
For me disabling Catalyst Control Center altogether (msconfig>startup>uncheck "Catalyst...") did the trick right away. I tried changing resolutions, settings, launching from GCT, changing compatibility mode to both 98 and XP, alt-tabbing out of the game and changing processor affinity, in addition to messing with most of the game settings in CCC all to no avail. Switched it off, rebooted, and BOOM pure liquid Anachronox.
