WHAT UP. I just reached Democratus. While I love the story and characters so far, the lack of battles has made to game feel like a point and click adventure game. Yes, the lamest genre ever created. So does the frequency of battles ever increase ie more dungeons etc or am I better off just finishing the story up on youtube?
You want MORE battles? The combat system is the worst part of this game!

Yeah, Anachronox is pretty much a point and click adventure with some light RPG elements thrown in there. Aside from having lots of people and objects to interact with, and plenty of running about through fields and corridors, the linear gameplay, lack of sidequests, godawful minigames (Nothing new to the JRPG genre, am I right? ¬_¬), passable combat, and shortage of customization aside from the cryptic Mystech system pretty much make Anachronox less of any kind of RPG and more of an adventure game.

However, you've managed to reach Democratus, and things only get cooler and stranger from here on in. Your opinion that point and click adventures are "the lamest genre ever created" is one I think you'll find few people here share. The fact that you've managed to play this far into it, and have enjoyed the story and characters (and presumably the humor and atmosphere), tells me that perhaps you've simply been playing the wrong adventure games.

For what it's worth though, the game starts out extremely light on combat, but once Mystech starts coming into play, combat starts to have a teensy bit more depth and considerably more frequency. Though, honestly, the battle system is horribly slow and clunky. I'm surprised you haven't been reaching for the fast-forward button.


This is really one you play for the story, though. Perhaps you might be better off watching it on YouTube, or better yet, checking out the popular Machinima classic, "Anachronox: The Movie", if you are finding so little enjoyment out of the gameplay. Anachronox is definitely one worth seeing through, no matter what you decide to do.

Point and click adventures are a popular genre on GOG. Even if you don't like them, you would do well to learn a little respect and maturity. I see lots of people, even here, saying (or at least implying) that first-person shooters are all mindless Call of Duty mainstream garbage that nobody over twenty would ever want to play, and that they've been ruining gaming since Wolfenstein 3D. They don't have to like them, but first-person shooters have been one of my favorite genres since I first had a crack at "Knee-Deep in the Dead" all those years ago.

There's an audience for just about everything here. You'll look smarter if you don't call what other people like "the lamest thing ever". Unless it really is that lame, of course. ;)

Seriously. Maybe Monkey Island, or even Day of the Tentacle, isn't your style. Try Beneath a Steel Sky if you haven't. It's free, you already have it on GOG, and it's one of my personal favorites. You might just change your mind and go on to enjoy Gabriel Knight and Tex Murphy, and I hope you do! :D

I remember there being more battle-focused sections in the later part of the game, but as Skunk said the story is more of a focus in Anachronox. The early parts of Democratus do not have much fighting but once you get through that there are some combat-heavy sections. It's more of a back-and-forth from there on, with non-combat and combat areas alternating. I'd recommend finishing up with Democratus and getting to the next combat section before you give up... it's a pretty good indication of the types of "dungeon" areas that you'll be seeing in the later parts of the game.

Keep in mind that a lot of the exploration and adventure-type quests will actually reward you with combat-related items, so it you're interested in boosting your party's combat skills there is an incentive to play through the non-combat sections also.
