Is there any way to play anachronox on 1440x900 resolution ? my monitor doesn't support 1820x720 and when I try to switch on hi-res graphics, even on 640x480 II get a blank screen, probably because it tries to set an unsupported res

Anachronox is a strictly 4:3 game. Not even 1280x1024 is available from the menu. And if you try to force widescreen resolutions in the config file you get the menus cut off in the bottom making the game practically unplayable. My suggestion is to use the resolution with the height value at or just below your monitor's native resolution. If your monitor has a native res of 1440x900 i would go for 1152x864. I do think it is posible to set custom resolutions (though I don't know how). This is mainly of interest to people using monitors with a native resolution of 1920x1080 as it would allow you to run it at 1400x1050
Where can I find the config file? In the anoxdata folder, there are several but none of them seem to specifically control the resolution

GOG.com\Anachronox\anoxdata\SAVE\GLOBAL\settings.cfg

The line you are looking for is - set u_gl_mode "9"
Set the number from anything from 3 to 9 for the resolution you want. 9 being 1600by1200 resolution.
All of this was covered in the Widescreen/HD? post.

Thanks to all you people. Will now give it a shot and tell you what comes up!
Sorry guys. doesn't work. even if I switch the value to 1.0, which is supposed to be 640x480 if I'm right, screen is blank if I run anox.exe.
I am such a noob. 3.0 Is 640x480!

I think 1 was supposed to be something as low as 512x384 or something.. That's crazy.

As an FYI, here are the values for the "set u_gl_mode" parameter, and their corresponding resolutions (from ForumPlanet):

0 for 320 x 240
1 for 400 x 300
2 for 512 x 384
3 for 640 x 480
4 for 800 x 600
5 for 960 x 720
6 for 1024 x 768
7 for 1152 x 864
8 for 1280 x 960
9 for 1600 x 1200
How do I open the settings.cfg file? It keeps telling me that I can't do it.

You should be able to open it with the Windows Editor, might be you have to right click and choose "open with".
I've edited the file and used the tool that comes with the game and none of them save my video settings. it always reverts to 3. any ideas?

Make sure you are opening the file as administrator.
Yep, run as admin and it still kicks back to low res every time. Running it on a Win. Vista 64bit machine... maybe I should try compatibility mode instead.
