I tried multiplayer for the first time today. I was able to connect without issue and the game I joined quickly found other players.

I found the game speed to be very fast. I don't know if it was always like this or if it is just running at a faster speed like Wing Commander II did.

I also don't know how to change from species to species without having to quit the game I'm playing and then rejoin as the other species.

Those two points aside I found the MP aspect of the game enjoyable. I'll try again tomorrow.
I'm a hardcore UT player, I'm used to fast, twitch shooters but this game feels like the characters walk way too fast, strafing feels exaggerated to the point of jarring and disorienting, I had to turn the mouse sensitivity way up to compensate. It doesn't feel like the game engine is running too fast, but rather this is just how the game was designed...
If the speed is too fast it is always possible to create your own game and reduce the speed down by 10% intervals until you reach 70%. So you can setup a game that is right for you.

Unfortunately there is no way to change species without exiting and re-entering the game. This maybe a hassle at first, but you get used to it. I personally feel this does not take anything away from the game though, as if this was available a player could always make a 'rock, paper, scissors' approach to the match and counter the races giving them trouble, if that makes sense.

I only tried single player but I don't see anything about a game speed option anywhere...

Ah sorry, I was only referring to multiplayer. I am sorry to say, I do not think there is a way to change game speed for single player.

Well I guess that officially kills my enthusiasm for the client AND the game. :/
Edit:
nm...

Before you completely quit, I suggest giving multiplayer a good chance. That is where most of the excitement for this game will generally be anyway. :)

I'm a bit of a single player gamer really, I don't often do or enjoy competitive multiplayer... plus I'm still annoyed at Galaxy forcing itself onto my SSD without asking.

I might give the multiplayer another go once i'm convinced Galaxy isn't terrible though.

You do realize this is supposed to be a test of multiplayer component of GOG Galaxy, right?

The rest of the Galaxy client isn't even available for public testing yet.
Well you know this already, but Galaxy is in it's infancy and so lacks many features and conveniences of a finished product. Allowing the user to choose the installation location wasn't implemented for this test.

The frenzied pace of multiplayer makes me tire of the game more easily. Though i feel pretty much the same way about say QuakeLive.

I do understand, but I have a serious pet peeve about auto-installers, even moreso software that refuse to let you set an install location. I wasn't expecting this from a GOG program, even in alpha.

If you aren't into competitive multiplayer you should try playing cooperative online. If friendly fire is turned off it becomes a completely non-competitive game, if friendly fire is left on it can become quite chaotic. As far as turning down the game speed for offline play goes you may change the speed in skirmish mode.

Co-op sounds more like it, but I don't think I like the way this game feels overall, I just tried skirmish at 70% speed and while it was a lot better than in the campaign, the game feels a bit bland to me, and that aim-assist is infuriating, is there any way to turn it off?

For Marines the Smart Gun has aim-assist as a major feature (you should be able to switch it on or off with Secondary Fire iirc), none of the other guns are supposed to have it.
