ReynardFox: Co-op sounds more like it, but I don't think I like the way this game feels overall, I just tried skirmish at 70% speed and while it was a lot better than in the campaign, the game feels a bit bland to me, and that aim-assist is infuriating, is there any way to turn it off?
avatar
WingedKagouti: For Marines the Smart Gun has aim-assist as a major feature (you should be able to switch it on or off with Secondary Fire iirc), none of the other guns are supposed to have it.
Ah thanks, I guess I latched onto the smart gun because the Aliens were so fast and I didn't have mousewheel weapon switching.
Played a bit of this last night. setting the game speed to 80-70% felt about right to me. I am not sure if that setting was taking effect properly however for other players specifically aliens. They are supposed to be fast, but they were across the room one second and eating your head the next. The AI aliens seemed to slow down properly though.

I played this game alot once apon a time and the aliens were quick, but not quite this quick. The player aliens also seem to take a bigger beating than they did in the past. Flame thrower is mostly useless now as they can run around a good 10 sec while on fire. REALLY REALLY FAST on fire. Not sure if this is because of this test, or something that was tweaked in the game and has nothing to do with this test.

ReynardFox: I'm a hardcore UT player, I'm used to fast, twitch shooters but this game feels like the characters walk way too fast, strafing feels exaggerated to the point of jarring and disorienting, I had to turn the mouse sensitivity way up to compensate. It doesn't feel like the game engine is running too fast, but rather this is just how the game was designed...
If I am honest this game needs a mod to really tone down movement speed a lot. Otherwise it kind of loses atmosphere. I was in a match last night playing as a Marine and I was outrunning Predators and Aliens lol.

I'm not sure if it was designed like this since I've never played this game before. I just felt that like WC 2 everything was moving much faster than intended.

This is exactly what I was talking about. I can understand a fast paced game to add tension or whatever but this isn't the same. Character models shouldn't feel as if they're teleporting from area of a room to another.

This is a minor quibble though. I like the atmosphere of the game and do want to play it more. It would just be more appealing to me if I could find some way to slow it down a little bit. The not being able to change species without quitting is by no means a deal breaker for me. I'm just a bit spoiled with more modern programming.

What you are talking about is understandable, but you have to also understand that this game comes from an age of incredibly fast twitch shooters, most shooter games were like this at the time. That being said, it is not uncommon for me to hear that this game is supposed to be faster than even the likes of those other twitch shooter games.
Lol I love how people are talking about wanting them to change the game and reduce the speed like it's some new game that's actively being worked on. GOG is not in the business of modifying how the games were, their goal is to get it working 100% on modern systems and this is the game as it was, speed and all. If you don't like it that's fine, but don't complain about wanting to change the game to suit your needs from how it was for us that played it in the past.
Keep begging Rebellion to release the updated AvP Classic source code and a speed mod for singleplayer will come out the next day.

ReynardFox: I'm a bit of a single player gamer really, I don't often do or enjoy competitive multiplayer...
It was my first time playing online multiplayer (a couple of LANs many, many years ago) and... It wasn't THAT "competitive" (kill/die ratio was pretty much evened out - though I didn't really care for that or my score) and I didn't encounter any "LOLZ... Y U so n00b?" stuff either.

Nah I wanted to see if there was community modding going on. Was wondering what would be required to make mods for this game :D Why should we get them to change it when we could do it ourselves?

Modding AvP Classic requires a copy of AvP Gold in order to fully install the official editing tools. You also need to do a few tweaks to get it working correctly on modern operating systems after installing. With it you can edit existing or create all new multiplayer/singleplayer maps, character models, weapons, sounds, textures, etc.. I do not know why Rebellion refuses to update the editing tools and make them accessible for all these new gamers.

More complicated stuff like brand new species, new game modes, altering speed, adding weapons like a working shotgun or combistick, tweaking the engine, etc. require the game source code. The original source code was released for AvP Gold over a decade ago. It is not compatible with AvP Classic. Rebellion would have to re-release the new code for us to play with if you want elaborate modifications.

Myself and a handful of others (literally you can count us on one hand) are still around who understand modding AvP. If anyone is serious about jumping into it I will happily answer questions and provide what you need to get started.

whodares2: I tried multiplayer for the first time today. I was able to connect without issue and the game I joined quickly found other players.

I found the game speed to be very fast. I don't know if it was always like this or if it is just running at a faster speed like Wing Commander II did.

I also don't know how to change from species to species without having to quit the game I'm playing and then rejoin as the other species.

Those two points aside I found the MP aspect of the game enjoyable. I'll try again tomorrow.
Host settings : Game speed - 100%, lower this

What you're experiencing is a phenomenon called "Getting Older" :) If you played this game when it first came out, that was 15 years ago. What seemed just right back then might seem way too fast now, nothing in the game has changed, but your reaction times have.

I've gone back and played DOOM and Quake and had similar responses that it felt WAY too fast. But it's not the game that's gotten faster, it's me being almost 20 years older than when I first played them.

Also yeah, in single or multiplayer, the player alien can take much more of a beating than the AI aliens. I used to dive on a marine in one of the earlier stages, and there were I think 4 marines in the area, with one inevitably having a flamethrower. So of course I'd end up on fire but I could still take all 4 of them out, and then chow down to regain enough health that the fire wouldn't kill me before going out.

There are some mods on ModDB, mostly updated graphics/textures. Don't know of any gameplay mods, though admittedly I haven't really looked for any

OUCH... no need to bring reality into this!

But, valid point. However last night the 70% seemed to work properly. Not sure if one of the patches fixed something, or if was just a bug or i didn't save settings or something. They are still of course fast, but at least i can see them now. We also seemed to have less disco's while playing so thats good as well.

Please excuse me, i need to chase some kids off my lawn. ;)

Hey milkman, I remember playing you in a PTAG last night. Just so you know, 70% works ridiculously in favour of the predator. He already has a ton of one-hit kill weapons, and lowering the game speed gives him more time to aim as well. Personally, 70% has always felt way too slow to me, I feel like I'm walking on the moon.

For me it's rather the opposite. I think the game would lose atmosphere (and even more balance) when it would be slower. I've never played a "modern" shooter, but when shooters seem to be slower these days this doesn't mean every shooter has to be boring slow. ;P
When you were outrunning aliens as a marine the aliens were not moving properly.

And most likely it's playing much smarter than an AI alien. :)
