Anyone wanna play? I bought this game recently and was very interested in the multiplayer but haven't found a game yet.
If i'm not mistaken the multiplayer was a test of GOG's efforts with their galaxy client and the multiplayer itself was only a temporary arrangement to test some stuff they were working on for the client in the future. My guess is if that is the case then it'll come back when they refine or finish their galaxy client.

Take what i say with a grain of salt though, i'm mostly working on shotty memory about this and probably wrong.
Multiplayer is still functional. While it was a test for GOG's galaxy client, it was not a temporary arrangement. The only problem is that it seems that 99% of players got this game because it was given out for free. As such, they have all left and it is nigh-impossible to either find an active server or to get joiners when starting a server. To the OP, I suggest getting this game on Steam if you're interested in the multiplayer. There's actually a community there and the multiplayer isn't barren.

The multiplayer is not tied to the release of GOG Galaxy, it still works.

The thing is that most of the GOG community is not really into online stuff (or FPSes in general, it's one of the least represented genres in here; you have loads of first person perspective games being sold on GOG, but they're mostly adventure and/or RPG games, not shooters per se). Speaking for myself, I got this game for free because I'm a huge Alien universe fan and I wanted to try it. Sadly, I find the Alien campaign to be subpar and it became obvious to me that the developers focused more on the Predator, so I basically uninstalled the game and don't plan on revisiting it any time soon. GOG wanted to test how their servers would hold up when dealing with a fast paced game, and for a while they had some momentum going on for this game. But now people are playing other things, I said from the start that Alien vs. Predator is not exactly GOG material. It's way too hardcore, by FPS standards, for the mostly adventure- and RPG-minded GOG user base.

It seems the game actually has a strong community on Steam, so, if you're really interested in playing it online right now, my best advice would be to get it there and play with their community. If you're not much of a Steam fan, you can always wait for the full release of the Galaxy client, which is supposed to let players with a GOG copy of a game play it with other people that have the Steam version.

O just tried the game, made myself the host and had like 5 people with me in less than 10min, it was fun and all! Too bad I didn't find a chat :(

I have just this minute left a multiplayer game and came here to ask if multiplayer is very active and if so at what times.

That was fun as heck! The people were nice and we had a few nice jokes in the chat whilst running around. I'd tried multiplayer once before when they first launched it to test and could only find full games or not any at all so I kind of backed away, I wish I hadn't.

Predators are scary, sniping, high damage and loads of health along with a cloak.
Aliens are scary, extreme speed and great damage potential whilst able to run on the freaking ceiling.
Marines are scary, 'cause they have some serious firepower in the form of grenade launchers and smart guns. (Plus it was the class I played and I came out on top which made it even more fun :D)

Please tell me it isn't going to be hard to find future matches (when I first tried there was only one match, during that match apparently another one opened up - I know 'cause people from it joined us and asked why we didn't move to their game ... weird - and by the time we were done there were no matches again).

I look forwards to the stress test later today, you can bet I'll be taking part in it!

... now to practice controlling that insane alien speed so I can ambush you all and eat your squishy, squishy brains.

It is going to be compatible with Steam's multiplayer? Well that's cool - any idea on a time frame (estimate/best guess obviously) assuming that today's stress test works out fine?

Actually, I recall from the dev stream that the predator levels were some of the last and most rushed. On the flipside, that meant they were more experienced when making them :P

I fear most of your other points are all too valid, unfortunately :(

Unfortunately, there's only a few regulars, not enough to sustain a persistent week-long cycle of running games. Our best bet would be to try to set up some weekly event. Until Galaxy's friend-functionality appears, that's the best we can do.

*Sigh* Well, I guess that should be expected considering the age of the game and the changes to the genre over the years. Still there is the odd game in the wake of the stress test so I've had a few matches.

I'm thinking I've played against you a few times - does that make it fair to say you are one of the regular players? If so I was wondering if some of the more experienced players would consider doing recordings of online play with commentary on what is done by experienced players and why, I mention this because I've seen a lot of people leave games simply due to unfavourable kill/death ratios and maybe some resource for them to get online play tips before jumping in would help them have more fun.
Even just a topic on the forums would be good I suppose.

I'd make a topic for it but I'm pretty awful myself, all I know is that it is fun to play.

Hi rhemorigher! Glad you had fun today. I have a ton of videos of AVP Classic 2000, several which I even made specifically for newcomers to the game on GOG. Here's a link to my playlist called GOG Tutorials. Hopefully it will clear some things up if you had any quesitons.

Yes, a lot of people leave when they get killed a lot. The game is brutal, but never unfairly so. Sticking with it for 900+ hours (as I have) pays off, and the best challenges you will get are on Steam.

Would you consider making a topic on here with that link so people can find it more easily? A better online community is of benefit to all and it might help people if it were more visible.

lol, actually I watched:
How To Survive As A Standard Marine Against A Pred (AVP Classic 2000)
The other day when looking for something to watch, didn't notice the uploader was the person killing me in game :P

I think I'll go and watch those now actually.

I'm not really regular, my schedule won't really permit me, but I try to be active when able. Olde's done a great job with his tutorials and there's little I can add to those. Heck, I've learned a few things from him myself. He's an old-school player, while I got into it with the Galaxy beta. Still, we're both usually open to giving tips and some in-game tutoring. Also, we will often change species if we see our opponent is inexperienced, just to make it more even and entertaining for them.

One thing I'd like to point out is that you don't need to follow his advice to the letter, unless you want to become hardcore competitive and care for the score above all. It's a valid approach, but the beauty of the game is in just how much freedom it gives you. Learn the important bits - movement, awareness, health and items - so that you're better able to survive, but it's entirely possible to play the game for the fun of it. For instance, I like to play a lurking, motionless alien that patiently waits out its prey, almost a role-playing thing. I don't always - people might get bored and just leave - but it's an option.

Any time you've got a question - ask away!
Considering how much fun I had during the stress test (and the fact that I basically missed out on MP back when AvP was new), I'd definitely like to see a weekly event or something similar.
