Since official gog.com support hasn't replied to me in about 4 days now I figured I'd post my problem here to see if anyone has any suggestions, fixes or similar experiences.
Basically anytime I play a mission in The Nations, the sound has a great deal of interruptions and stuttering. This gets worse the further I zoom out the camera. It sounds like the game's sound effects are interrupting the music, and the more of the game field I can see, the more sounds there are to interrupt the music.
I wouldn't say the game is unplayable, but it's annoying enough that I haven't played the game for a while - despite just having bought it.
And the odd thing is that the demo version (downloaded from JoWooD's own website) has none of these problems.
Any suggestions?

If you go into the games folder does it have any config or ini files you can open with notepad?
Also could you please post what OS your running and what soundcard/chip you have?

No config or .ini files to be found.
I'm running it on Windows 7 Starter (32b), on my Asus Eee 1001PX netbook with the Intel Atom 450 chip and it's onboard sound card (Realtek High Definition Audio).
Not ideal, but you'd think it could handle an old game like The Nations.

GameRager: Sounds like a sound buffering issue. I don't know much about it but it sounds like what others describe when referencing sound buffering problems......like in some old dosbox games if you set the sound buffer to too high or low it'll cause sound stutters and cutouts......don't know if your game's config files have a sound buffer/sound block size/sound chunk size setting or entry but if they do it might be worthwhile to edit those to higher and lower settings.
That sounds about right. Problem is that there are no config files (atleast none that I can find). Is there a way to set a buffer size globally, and then force programs to stick to that setting?

GameRager: Check the game's install directory and any directories inside it for .cfg or .ini files....or any file marked settings or config/cfg.....tell me what you find.
There's a configuration file for the uninstaller. That's all.
It's called unins000.ini and reads:

[GOGNATIONSGOLD]
Files=0
Dirs=0
[Setup]
Game_0=GOGNATIONSGOLD
Games=1

No files related to the actual game =/

GameRager: The folder where you installed it should have all the game files...where are you looking?
D:\Program Files\GOG.com\The Nations Gold
and all subfolders.
No configuration files there, beyond the one related to the uninstall program
Checked for hidden files too. Still nothing there.

GameRager: List the files in the main folder, and also the names of all subfolders....don't list subfolder files yet though. I'll try to figure it out.

Erh... was that post empty (save for the quotes) on purpose?

I had this issue as well (as well as a couple of old games here) I resolved it by turning sound acceleration off in DXDiag

WinXP SP3 with an actual Creative Soundblaster Live! X-Gamer card.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the suggestion, though it seems that there are no sound acceleration options in Windows 7 =/

This helped me -- thanks! Windows XP, Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices -> Volume -> Speaker settings -> Advanced -> Performance -> Hardware acceleratoin.

I had to turn it all the way down to None to nearly eliminate the stuttering.

I'm glad it helped someone =)
I still find it odd that this problem exists in Win7 though. Win7 doesn't even have the options you're referring to, and according to the intarnetz it doesn't support sound hardware acceleration at all. Seems strange that something that's not there can cause a problem.

I found another solution too. See the older thread here about "Cannot change resolution". In the tool described there (with caveats), as I increased the number of textures, the sound problems decreased. But the startup time increased -- at infinite textures, it seemed to take an infinite amount of time to start. :( The sound was much better for me by about 2000 textures, I think. (I don't have access to that computer to check right now.)

Unfortunately it didn't work. I tried various different configurations of texture limit, resolution and texture memory. Nothing helped =/

I'll just keep waiting for GOG to respond to my ticket. 3 months and counting...
Not the most artful solution, but simply deleting all of the music files will neatly solve the problem.
