This game was poorly coded for PC, I'm sticking right around 40~45 fps on a 550 ti with an i5 at 1920x1080 on medium settings

Are you talking about American Nightmare? Because OP did and that one seems to be much more optimized than the main game.

Also I can't imagine that either one runs that "badly". I'm playing with all details and 1920x1200 on on my 560 ti and there's no notable framerate drops.

Thanks for the late reply, but it really turned out that my GPU was about to kick the bucket, the game wasn't at fault here.
AW and AW:AN ran flawlessly, maxed out on my quad core 2.6ghz with a 465 gtx and looked GREAT doing it.

I've never seen any of these problems...

40~45 fps is quite good. Minimum FPS required for a game to be considered "smooth" is 30.
I have an intel Core i5 3.3Ghz to 3.7Ghz, Nvidia GeForce 560Ti, Windows 7 64bit and 8Gb RAM. I get between 40-50 FPS in Alan Wake, with dips to the 30s sometimes. The game is NOT that amazing graphically, but it still happens. I think there are at least SOME optimization issues.
