Ive been enjoying learning multiplayer AOW:SM, and am looking to drum up interest for a new vanillaish SM email game to learn more tactics and nuances of the mp game. Experienced players are welcome, it would be nice to use the forum discussion of the game to maybe talk about the game mechanics, tips on strategy, and the nuances of the online exp to help bring myself and other new players up to speed. Anyone in?
Yeah I am in.

Played a lot of single player back in the days, MP only since GOG re-released the games.

Happy to play and share!
Though I'm alive still in our other newbie game, it's more due to dumb luck than skill. (As in Vorsar hasn't made a bee line for me and I didn't leave my Wizard completely undefended next to a stack of hostile Orc Warlords... Oops.)

A buddy of mine and I have been playing a bunch of MP games on the side. We've been going through the fancy maps over on AOW Heavens and looking for maps in which co-op versus the AI is allowed or supported. That way we can play multi-player but not have to fight each other. Instead we ally which lets us see each others vision range which is a big boon.

We've played about 10 games over the past two months since the pace of two people taking turns is much faster than a game with six or eight humans. We've also done a few 1 vs. 1 maps as well which can be very educational.

Long story short, pick a map, ping a new GOG friend, and get the party started. One word of warning, some of the user created maps are freakishly hard. Many were made for Expert players so require a large amount of caution.
that sounds fun. it would be nice to play in sessions sometime to speed up progress, but i like the slowness of the email game as well. Do you want to play a coop game WJ? Mimo would you be interested in any type of game? Thanks for responding, K

I'll start a new thread and send you a turn this afternoon. (I've got a 2 hour conference call scheduled for this afternoon which is screaming for some AoW multi-tasking.) The thread is fun to chat through since it's entertaining to read for other newbies and/or lurkers with too much time on their hands.

Re: Speed of play - I'm with you on that. There are evenings when I'm up for knocking out five or six turns and there are weeks where I'm lucky to get a turn in. My friend and I found that this games lends itself very well to the bouncing between these two extremes. I usually try and knock out a turn before 7 AM on the East Coast and another late in the evening after the kids go to bed. (Turns sometimes get snuck in at work on my laptop when the game is at an exciting juncture too.)

I used to play HoMM with a friend in hotseat mode all the time and we used to get mad at each other because my turns always took 3 minutes and his always took 20 minutes. I've been on the other side of that equation as well. The guy fighting lots of tactical battles needs a lot more time, so PBEM works very well.
I'm also on the east coast, could probably do a turn in the am and pm as well. Thanks again
Incandenza,

I do not mind a coop game. Pick one you like!

@Mimo: Damn right! My work is quite volatile, sometimes I cannot squeeze in one turn, sometims I have plenty of time. At home, wife and baby, so not always the right time to play a turn :)

I used to play HoMM and AoW in hotseat, back in the days. Behind one computer, countless of hours. Amazing gameplay, though I really favour AoW as being a much completer game.

I'd never heard of AoW until I saw it on Gog and I only picked it up because of Davespice's multiplayer games. I think I'd entered the worker bee phase of life by the time it came out originally. HOMM 1 and 2 were the games my friends and I played to death, so it must have been '96 and '97. Post college, but before reality/responsibility kicked in. Dating myself there.

Hope the two of you get a game going. We may be forced to restart the game we're playing co-op right now since I screwed up and lost my Wizard in Turn 2 or 3. Oops. Guess that makes me eligible for a newbie game :)
Hey Wenne,

Saw the game you sent me and took a turn. Unfortunately I may have lost everything hunting infidels my first turn. A bit embarrassed, we'll see. I didnt see a thread for the game, is it in the forums? Thanks again, k
Incandeza,

If we play 1 vs 1, do you mind not posting turn logs? Makes it easier for me :)

As regards our current game: I have built my first pioneer and I am now building a second and a third. My first pioneer is moving together with my wizard to the ruin that has a wizard tower. That will be my new capital....

I too will post only sometimes in our 1 on 1... (My work has blocked access to Gog!) Plus, like Wenne, I hop between two computers which generates a lot of error messages :)
thats totally cool. in game messages work well.
