I have AOW:SM on steam, and I've never played multiplayer before, but I don't think I'll try to join this match, I just had a few questions tho, in case I decide to start playing mp (I'll get a copy on GOG also soon).

How frequently do people need to do their turns in a PBM game? I work 10-12 hours a day 20 days at a time, so I may only get 1 or 2 turns a day max, as I will only be able to do turns after I return from work..

Next question, if I get in a match and I'm just not able to play enough, can I surrender or can you guys like "vote me off the island" without too much hassle?

Next question, will my general lack of "skill" at mp games be a detriment or make me less desirable to play with?

Traditionally people only start complaining if a turn hasn't been played for two days, but it's fairly common for people to take weeks off on occasion due to holidays, being busy, or whatever else. Not like there's really any choice but to wait for the player. Most of the time PBEMS of five players do a full cycle every day or two though.

You can surrender out of matches though my preference would be to just stall the game if you're willing to come back to it in a few weeks.

Lack of skill is not an issue, though I have to say losing to Mimo at least 90% of the time has gradually dampened my eagerness to play 1v1s with him.

More broadly, there are very few remaining players, and like you can see we're even struggling to fill spots for a 4 player aow2 game (though a few more play AoW1). So we aren't going to be picky! And I think the average age of players must be something like 30+, so it's pretty chill. No butthurt CoD hacking 15 year olds or whatever.

Come join us for a game or two! I work a crap ton of hours as well and generally have only a 20-30 minute window every other day for playing turns. :)

I honestly don't think you need the GoG version to play, just install the 1.4 patch from heavengames and install the email file wrapper too. And then create a "burner" email account to use. I use a gmail account and set it to the lowest possible security settings to get it to work.

Being sucky isn't an issue. We all start somewhere. I've been playing 4X games for 30 years and my first try against humans was three years ago via this forum and I can't go back now. The AI just uses extra resource production and stupidity, a human sends druids up river at night in a canoe and stabs your Wizard in the back. (Or so I've heard from Southern.)

Vouching! I was surprised to win 2 or 3 times in a row when I joined. The current game though I feel like I'm the last in the line! Maybe these smarties have just baited me into betting more...

As Southern says, ideally you'll be able to take your turn within about 2 days, but people usually will cut you some slack, especially if you let people know (beforehand) that you may be slower.

Turns can be resent and redirected to a substitute or something if needed.

As long as you're willing to suffer setbacks from things that you didn't even know were things, lack of experience isn't a problem. You'll learn as you play.

Good way to set up PBEMs. Set it up as a question and when you have a full roster of players, change the question to answered.

Been playing some 1v1 games with Southern using the MPE mod. It's really good and definitely changes a lot of the dynamics. Nothing super earth shattering, but little stuff that make things make more sense.

For example, Shades no longer have path of darkness and concealment. Was stupid to have both since path of darkness points you to exactly where the shade is hiding in the woods. :)
