Hello!

Been playing the campaign, and have reached the first Elvish map. Throughout the tutorial, I never came across any sort of information regarding ranged attack odds.

In most games with tactical combat, like Wesnoth, Advanced Wars, etc. With ranged attacks you had something showing you what your odds where for hitting. Say 35% from this angle, and so on.

Shadow Magic doesn't seem to have this feature, and since this is my first Age of Wonders game, I'm kind of at a loss. Is there a way to see how effective your ranged units are? I see things like '-50 distance' but this doesn't help me. Does that mean I have a 50% chance to hit?

Any help would be appreciated!

The really short answer is green dots to the target are go for it, yellow dots are good luck, and red dots are forget about it.

The longer answer (which I may be wrong about...) is that you have a base to hit percentage (0-100%), a height modifier (+/-10%), a range modifier, and an obstacle modifier. Sum up the numbers and bam, you have your odds. That isn't the full story of course since if the obstacle is another unit, you might hit them instead.

Ranged weapons are a crap shoot of quality... Archers and crappy Level 1 shooters are only good against weakly defended units. Ballista and Cannon are awesome at intimidating the AI since they can take down heroes and Level 3/4 units. Spear chuckers aren't bad as one offs who then become cannon fodder. The pistol firing units are probably the best bang for the buck though since their attack values are so high. (Sorceresses with their paralyzing shots are the best, but they are hard to come by.)

Hey thanks! I was watching a lets play, and it seemed like there was an actual number I was missing. I think I've got it now thanks to your explanation. :)
