The screen is frequently flickering, but with no real pattern. Like it'll flicker three times in a second, then nothing for 15 seconds, then one flicker, etc. It seems to get less frequent at lower resolutions - though that could just be random. To be honest, I have already discovered that if I put it in windowed mode, the flickering stops. I'd just like to be able to play it in 1280x1024, fullscreen mode, though, if possible.

A new problem has arisen, but it seems related. As I said above, running in windowed mode stops the flickering, but there's an error that seems unique to windowed mode (this could just be because it's been in windowed mode a lot more than full screen mode by now). I'll get an error relating to "drawing" a certain unit or part of the map. The map then goes totally blank, all cities and additional features disappear, sometimes everything goes an almost luminous shade of green.

When this happens, the error message keeps reopening if you press "OK". If you hold Esc down you can move the map around as the error message rapidly opens and closes. Doing this stops the error message being displayed and the game goes back to normal but if you return to the exact co-ordinates the error happened at, it repeats all over again.
I'm having this exact same problem for all 3 games.

Could anyone help to resolve this issue? I'd like to play these games without all of the screen flickering involved.
I had a slight flicker, possibly related, when I ran the game using AoW.exe.
I noticed, however, that the link provided uses the launcher to run AowCompat.exe. I don't get any flicker that way.

Unfortunately it still flickers for me. :(

i turned on d3d in options..it seems to have stopped the flickering. Will report back if it occurs again..so far so good though..playing through the tutorial for about 15 mins.

I'm not sure what you meant by switching on D3D, I could not find this option to switch it on in the game's settings.

Btw, tested on my netbook, runs great, but the flickering is still there, though it is less frequent now.
as I posted on the other thread on flickering, turning on D3D solved the problem for me too.

use the config tool in the game folder. the game only launches it the first time.
where do you enable d3d in aow1?
I looked for a d3d setting in the setup progam but did not see it either. Are you suppose to run something other than AoWSetup.exe to make that change?
Hey GOG, please resolve this problem?
Hi folks, I am not sure if this will help you. But I have found that the game screen will flicker a bit when there are other graphical events happening in the background on windows. Such as a pop up bubble being displayed in the system tray.

Try shutting down all other software, especially any instant messenger software that shows those kinds of notifications and see if that gives you any improvements.
Thanks for help. But the problem continue.

Have you tried turning off Windows Aero? As in going back to old style, grey, classic, windows.
Right click on desktop / personalize / choose windows classic theme.
If that stops it then you know that Windows Aero is the culprit.

Aero is off. Problem remain.
