One line summary of your issue
Manual saves fail, autosave and quicksave are functional.

What platform are you running the game on?
GoG

What operating system do you use?
Windows10

Which version of the game are you running?
v1.404.43827

What expansions do you have installed?
Revelations, Invasions, Star King

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
Attempts to manually save the game return an error message. Autosave and quick-save work normally.
Attempted solutions: granting full permissions on the basic user level in the Saves folder. Tried removin folder and having the game create a new one. Added bit defender exception for the aowpf.exe. No resolution.
This is a new issue that appeared with the most recent install of the game.

I tried setting full acess to cloudsaves folder but it did not resolve the issue. It did prompt me to check GOG settings and sync with the cloud option is greyed out and the AoWPF tab seems to have issues with connection to servers - "Similar Products" window returns an error for example. So this might be a GoG client issue.

Have you tried verifying your files?
Yes

Steps to reproduce the issue
Trying to manually save the game

You seem to have three different things to consider here: Bit Defender, aowpf, and Windows 10. I'm not terribly familiar with aowpf in particular, or Bit Defender, but this has a good chance of just being a Windows permissions issue.

Do the autosaves and manual saves write in the same folder? My hunch is that they don't (but please clarify).

If you run the exe as an admin / elevated permission, does this allow you to save the files manually?

I will try to help, I do not have the game. (Sorry for the CAPS, too much to fix now. Not intentional, but forgot at some point)

But, I don't believe the previous reply is heading you in the right direction.

My understanding is the following, as I have been doing some research on the saving and DLC issues some had with Guest Mode on Steam:

{{ EDIT IN NOTE:

The likely save location is:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\My Games\AoW3\Profiles

Or something similar. Just think of the % parameters as meaning whatever your actual User Name on your PC is. Let's say that you called your computer something like TERROR, then it would look like this:

C:\Users\TERROR\Documents\My Games\AoW3\Profiles

And you can get to this via your File Explorer or however else you are used to navigating around your hard disk, whatever works for you.
}}

1) Let's keep it simple for testing purposes to get a fix.

2) Let's try to play Single Player, otherwise other issues may be introduced.

3) When you start the game by its Launcher, did you tick the lower bottom right GUEST MODE ... OR ... Did you Register an Account with Triumph Studios? YOU DON'T NEED MORE THAN GUEST MODE FOR SINGLE-PLAYER, OTHERWISE POSSIBLE OTHER CONCERNS, WHICH I WILL IGNORE HERE.

4) GUEST MODE ONLY ALLOWS ON-DISK SAVES -- AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT THEY SAY ON THE STEAM FORUMS. THIS MEANS THAT IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY THAT THE CLOUD SAVES ARE NOT POSSIBLE ON GOG VERSION OR THAT YOU HAVE TO FIND OUT WHERE THE GOG GALAXY GOES TO SAVE IN ITS CLOUD, IF THAT IS EVEN POSSIBLE.

5) There are reports in the past, on the Steam Forums, that AUTOSAVES and QUICKSAVES may be stored on a different location than MANUAL SAVES in that version. It is an unfortunate tradition since old days that if you do not register a game NOR choose the GUEST MODE (which here means OFFLINE MODE to the launcher and requires no personal info but allows all single-player access supposedly), you may default to what is traditionally a DEMO MODE. DEMO MODES were meant to be playing the game on a demo loop on a kiosk that shows off the game, traditionally. Point being, if you did not choose either, perhaps the autosaves on exit, autosaves, and quicksaves have a different control and thus location. Just remember that the locations for saves may be different.

MY GUESS AT TO WHAT IS GOING ON BASED ON THE ABOVE:

-- You have already tried much, highly unlikely that it has anything to do with anti-virus, etc.

-- Remember if you are fully Registered with a Triumph Account or have selected the GUEST MODE selection at supposedly the botton left of the LAUNCHER. Either achieves the same result for single player. GUEST MODE WILL NOT GIVE YOU ONLINE ACCESS FOR MULTIPLAYER ETC, SUPPOSEDLY.

-- IF YOU HAVE ALREADY AN ACCOUNT, you will be able to see it, somewhere on the Launcher, as a drop-down selection box. Highlight and select, supposedly, and then the Saves Checkbox will go from Grey to colored, supposedly. Then you can save SUPPOSEDLY, to the STEAM CLOUD FOR STEAM USERS. But that may not help you unless GOG has also instituted the same capability.

-- THEREFORE, I WOULD SUGGEST TICKING ON THE GUEST MODE BOX AT BOTTOM OF THE LAUNCHER, AND THEN ATTEMPTING TO DO NEW SAVES, THESE NEW SAVES WILL BE TO THE HARD DRIVE OR SSD YOU HAVE AT THE DESIGNED DISK SAVE LOCATION, WHICH SHOULD BE SOMEWHERE IN DOCUMENTS. I HAVE FORGOTTEN EXACT LOCATION, BUT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND IT, AND THE STEAM FORUMS DO MENTION IT SOMEWHERE IN A STICK POST.

-- NOTE -- IT IS LIKELY THAT YOU WILL WANT TO START UP A NEW GAME AND TRY SAVING IT FRESH AFTER A COUPLE MINUTES MANUALLY WITH A CUSTOM EASY TO FIND DISTINCT NAME AND THEN FIND IT, THEN YOU WILL DEFINITELY KNOW WHERE IT SAVES.

-- THEN TEST LOAD THAT NEW SAVE AND SEE IF IT MATCHES WHERE YOU LEFT OFF.

-- THEN YOU HAVE TO TRY TO FIND THE OTHER SAVES, BUT AT LEAST YOU KNOW THE NAME AND FORMAT OF THE SAVES AND FILETYPES, AND MOVE THEM, IF REQUIRED TO THE SAME FOLDER. HOWEVER, I BET YOU THAT YOU WILL NOW FIND THE NEW SAVE IN THE SAME PLACE AS THE AUTOSAVES YOU FOUND EARLIER.

-- YOUR ANCIENT MANUAL SAVES MAY ACTUALLY EXIST, BUT IN A DIFFERENT PLACE. BUT PROBABLY THEY SIMPLY TRIED TO GO TO THE CLOUD AND THERE IS NO ACCESS TO THE CLOUD VIA GOG, AT LEAST WHEN YOU TRIED IT, SINCE AT THE VERY LEAST YOUR LOCATION FOR SAVES IS NOT CORRECT.

TLDR:

Game cannot save to cloud since Gog version. If you have Guest Mode, cannot save to Cloud anyway. Cloud saves is meant for STEAM SAVES, unlikely Gog has one also, but they might using Gog Galaxy. Autosaves and Quicksaves must be saving to the disk via a discrepancy in design and as a protection, since internet might go down.

Otherwise more detail above.

LAST NOTE -- PCGAMINGWIKI may have the correct save location, sometimes it is not up to date. Worst case, I'd go to the various Steam Forums which have multiple Dev Made Stickies on various Tech solutions and in the forums. I know they answered it in at least 4 threads.

Good luck, my friend.

6) The game's launcher has been updated multiple times, and I believe some of the patch notes mention save locations have been changed, in location.
