Bookwyrm627: Dwarves are just too flipping slow.
avatar
Mimo: Yep. I almost always end up with an army of stone skinned Moles rather than Runemasters when I play Dwarves. 32 move versus 24 move is too important. And when you attack a garrison, the Moles are always targeted over your heroes since they have wall crushing.

Much rather lose cannon fodder (Moles) than the a hero when the AI is controlling the battle...

Frostlings are pretty flipping slow too. That's why I went for Doom Wolves as fast as I could.
I seriously thought about the moles more than once, but there was a hefty combat stat disparity between moles and runemasters for similar build times. Of course, considering just how well the runemasters did in combat, it wouldn't have mattered a lick anyway.

I don't think I got a hero to level 3 this entire game. >.<

Mimo: I kept a nice balance of good and evil cities and units till near the end. I was quested to raze an Undead city and after doing so, all the Undead units started abandoning me. Not much fun having my own Dread Reapers assault me... But by then it didn't really matter.
I saw so many of your undead units in anarchy state and some of them for several turns and I just hoped they will leave you and it seemed they just didn't seem to want to. And at the same time I lost almost all my archon units in the other map because I lost neutral (!) town.

It was uphill struggle for the rest of us since mimo gained second tower so early.
I made poor play by going all directions and none at all at the same moment. If I commited and went to finish off someone earlier, I could have much better chance. Also, for once I ignored dispel magic spell I tend to use often and here it would be really useful against those wolves.
Well played Mimo. I regret that I wasted so much time around Anon. He had me running back and forth to get healing with those damn Divine Storms. And I focussed too much on building Knights all over the place, but with the movent issues on this map I should have bee-hived for Air Galleys a lot sooner.

Ah well. The rematch is on its way. Would be great if anyone but Mimo would win that one ;)
Dwarves

Frosty, Day 62

Guess I should've brought TWO TREES on Day 61 to settle the matter. Was hoping the extra glowing orb would help...

Finished the Dwarves today. Turning my attention to the Goblins now. Will take me a little while to get my troops there, but there is nothing they can do until then. I gave them a little taste of my power to make them appreciate it today and understand the futility of resistance.

OOC: I used a couple of violent storms on a stack of Dwarves that were standing next to a magic vault several turns ago. It killed off the Dwarves and also killed off most of the defenders of the magic vault. Not a bad way to turn a "strong" defense into a "weak" one. As if I need more cheating ways. At least I share them. :-p

When I saw the double storm, I knew your line about "you guys can outcast me" was a load of bunk. If you can afford to drop two storms on a half stack of half dead level 1's that aren't a threat to anything nearby, then it means you don't have anything more important to do with your spell casting.

I would never have expected that bit about wiping out site guardians that way, though. o.O

Edit: What were you usually casting, anyway? I'd have expected a lot more birds flying around, claiming map structures and otherwise being really annoying. Ice Age probably took 3-4 turns, but I don't recall seeing any other buffs besides Haste.

Haste was the only buff I had available to cast. I also summoned a bunch of Northern Glows to use as scouts when the birds started getting knocked out of the sky. Didn't learn a better summon (Ice Dragon) till near the end and never cast it.

Violent Storm is a really low mana cost spell and quite powerful, so I could actually cast it three times in one turn. Did so to Southern when his Frog army invaded early in the game. Very biblical rain of frogs after that left food for all the French in my armies. :)

Honestly, I was pretty much using all my spell points casting haste on the slow trees (and on my Wolves). At 15 points per casting, that ate up all my spell points most turns. I only cast Ice Age near the end of the game as something to do. I had Divine Storm (learned in a vault) for ever and never a chance to use it. Finally got to cast Fire Storm (also learned in a vault) on the Goblins this past turn as they stood one hex outside of my spell casting range. Actually didn't know it could reach till I tried it...

Ah. I thought Haste was cheaper than that, since I'm pretty sure you got both casting cost reductions; Stone Skin was going for 6 mana per cast after I got the reductions from skills.
Dwarves, Last Day

Learned something new: auto-combat doesn't just run an actual combat in the background and just show hits, or else those extra wolves wouldn't have been able to start eating my soldiers on the same turn that two of them attacked the gate.

Also, disappointing, but unsurprising, I didn't get a single kill in that battle.

Frosty, Day 63

One of our enemy charges, the other retreats. Matters not. Weight is being brought to bear soon.

Bookwyrm627: I never had enough gold to build up, and I had no idea what units to try building to do anything at all against doom wolves. We needed to collectively jump on you right after you took out Southern, but nobody recognized the danger at the time.
I would suggest abominations for entangle. I am convinced that unit is super OP when they don't have a halfling slinger do 16 damage in 1 round to them.

Also, apologies for not raising the alarm about Mimo after he beat me.Maybe we should all try to gang up on him more often.

I don't think I could have used them effectively; to keep them in line I'd have to stack them with dwarf units.

Frosty, Day 64

Taking a while to move units into positions of usefulness. Like a scene from some movie... Goblins come scurrying out of their holes with lots of clicking and clacking sounds.

Anon is taking the fight to me right now. Good for him. Day late and a dollar short Sir Anon.
