I bought Age of Wonders 1 today because I wanted to relive the good old moments I had with this game. I noticed that I couldn't play in fullscreen because it would just freeze, which already started with the intro movie. I tried running it in windowed mode and that worked. My screen resulotion is 1600x900 and the windowed screen is quite small and I have trouble looking at small things..

Is there any way to make this game work in fullscreen?
Hmm... my version of AoW1 works fine on WIndows 7 fullscreen, but I don't have the GOG version. Old CD.

Have you tried disabling the intro movie, if that's where the game crashes? There's an option under "gameplay" settings in the in-game start menu.

Does it also freeze if you switch to fullscreen once you're already in-game?

Disabling the intro movie doesn't do anything, it just startes at the main menu but it still freezes..

I tried alt + enter from window mode and fullscreen mode but that doesn't work either.
Hmmmm. I'm running on Windows 8.1 and it doesn't have any issues like that. Have you tried running it at a different resolution? Sometimes old games can be finicky about higher ones.

Also, I seem to recall there being some sort of strange issue on some systems with DirectSound, try disabling that and see if it works.

I've tried different resolutions like you suggested.. Too bad that didn't work either. DirectSound can't be the problem because I've never put that on.
I've had freezing problems too sometimes, but only at the intro and the mainscreen. Also you can change the windowed resolution too! btw I have an old CD.

once i start playing there usually isn't a problem.

There might be a problem with drivers not sure
