Yes, you can set up an email game and email each other your turns.

There's a fanmade utility program that automatically sends the turn in an email when you press end turn, and automatically takes received turns from your email and puts them into the game's files, downloaded here:
http://aow.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=1122

I can't remember how it all works off the top of my head but I can answer questions you might come up with when you try to set it up.

Not when playing by email.

Also, you'll need an email account that is NOT hotmail. Hotmail made some setting changes or something a year or two ago, and the wrapper is no longer able to send email from a hotmail account.

I have no idea. I've only played single player or PBEM using the wrapper. I know the hotmail thing because I was using a hotmail address when the change occurred.

As long as you can get the wrapper working, I'd imagine you'll be able to participate in PBEM games with us just fine.

It may be possible to configure Wine to work with the wrapper, but it is simpler to just find the file location and email it back and forth.

You can play live simultaneous games through virtual LAN like hamachi. Before GOG hosted AoW, a few of us used to coordinate live games on heavengames.

Really ought to make more effort on my turnlogs. Or bully my irl friend (who played in that one 6-player AoW2 game, Sacred Flame or something) into playing again since he writes tryhard larp posts for turnlogs, quality stuff

Turn logs are definietly half the fun when playing online. You don't require the Wrapper for PBEM, it just makes it simpler. I could never get it to work correctly for myself. When you create a PBEM game your end turns are saved to the Email Out folder. Just copy this file and send it as an email attachment. When you receive a turn just copy it to your Email In folder. Easy.
