Have to be honest, I've only played PBEM and only with the 1.4 patch / no mods. If that sounds appealing, let me know.

hey. i don't play mods too. mpe is not a mode its fix for the game. alot of fixes. i never seen what is PBEM lets see :)

PBEM is much slower (classic turns) than playing online together (simultaneous turns). But it suits the folks with jobs and crazy life schedules much better. :-/

I tried playing HoMM3 live, the end result was playing for six hours straight to get through the early game and then someone abandons, and that's that. It's just impractical.

AoW2's Simultaneous turns must be a vast improvement over HoMM3's classic turns, but I'll stick to dota2's 40-minute games when I want 'fun' and 'action'.
