I'm sure there are many who would disagree with this take, but I absolutely hate the idea that May 4th is now known as "Star Wars Day". Since when do we give massive corporations like Disney a free day out of the year to jam their merchandise down our throats? Even if you're a fan of Star Wars, I really don't see why the public should support such a ridiculous holiday. Maybe it's just me, but I can think of far better things to celebrate than a film franchise that was beaten to death a long time ago.

I'm inclined to agree on another reason: The fourth of May is also a remembrance day in the Netherlands, followed quickly by their Liberation day.

Sure it's silly, and I don't "celebrate" it in any way, but if people have fun with it, or with "talk like a pirate day", or some other bit of nonsense - power to them, as far as I'm concerned.

With your "don't give Disney free publicity" take you could just as well demand people don't wear Star Wars t-shirts or don't call their dog Chewbacca I mean, I can get disliking Disney, but there's no point cutting off your nose to spite your face. I don't see why people should need a special day to Star Wars stuff, but then I never was the type of guy to need a sense of belonging to some larger group, which I guess is the point of such a "special day" - to get a sense of sharing the hobby with people all over the world. And while I'm always wary of any and all examples of "flock mentality", I'm not quite enough of an asshole to demand people give all that up just because I don't like the current owner of the franchise.

Just ignore it like you ignore all the dozens of other silly "days of this and that" throughout the year. Or if you can't, watch some Babylon 5 to have some fun and feel satisfyingly contrarian at the same time.

But what if I plan to enjoy watching Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda?

Or the X-Files?

Just don't venture beyond season 2 and you just might have a shot (I think, it's been a long while since I watched that show).

You can get double points if you watch that episode of the B5 spin-off The Crusade where they pick up alien version of Mulder and Scully from a planet that hasn't made first contact with other species yet.
It's just a distraction from real holidays like Cinco de Quatro.
It is not a celebration.

It is a memorial where we commemorate the ill fated original holiday event.

The Star Wars Holiday Special should never be forgotten.

The sacrifices Chewbacca made to visit his family on Kashyyyk are rarely acknowledged. Many Bothans died for less.

May 4th isn't a public holiday.
And every day is a religious, national oder international day of something or someone.

May 2nd was "World Tuna Day" as set by the United Nations. Who cares?
Sadly, it's a commemorative day, not a holiday. Because I sure could use more of those.

Just appreciate the pun and discounts on the old games if you like them. If not, then ignore and go about your day.
Darth Vader didn't sacrifice himself to have his force ghost replaced with Hayden Christensen for nothing.

May the Fourth be with you, good sir!

I've been ignoring it for years, but unfortunately every company feels to need to use this stupid day to push their own Star Wars related merchandise (like GOG and countless others). I get that it was originally intended to be a harmless joke, but it's gotten to the point where it's starting to get really annoying. Just one man's opinion.

It has become so unjustifiably-pervasive that it is difficult to escape. This afternoon, I had encountered this on a highway digital information board.

Perhaps, some find it precious and/or humorous, but, I have only utter disdain for 'popular culture' being referenced by supposed authorities of public safety.

I know of a friend's cat who would kill for tuna. Perhaps she might care about this holiday? xD
May is also National Pet Month in the US. Instead of celebrating Star Wars, you can celebrate cats and dogs.

May 25th (which is also Towel Day) is also my cat's observed birthday.
Then you will be branded with a scarlet letter and Shunned from this community. Anyone who enjoys a .... *shudder* "planetship".. cannot remain a member of the human race. Along with all those who enjoy sharknados.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to sit in my room and do nothing on my birthday.
