tfishell: Apparently some modders are not happy about their mods being included?
"Oh no! I made a mod freely available to anyone, but I'm miffed when someone else provides it to others in a comprehensive package while still crediting me! Woe is me!"

Sure, on the one hand, GOG asking for permission (which typically does not need to be done when already credited) and then making the package available before receiving an answer is odd, but on the other hand, modders can be such prima donnas. Nobody is making money off of this, so why not let a much wider audience enjoy the fruit of your labors who would not have heard of it or used it otherwise? *le sigh*

https://forums.dfworkshop.net/viewtopic.php?p=61801#p61801

I wonder how long the GOG store page will stay up.
It just screams like GOG trying to make the game more palettable for zoomers. Only the vanilla DFU should of been included, if someone wants mods they can get them manually.
avatar
Crosmando: Isn't DFU still in beta?
It has reached feature parity several years ago already, one of the last things missing before 1.0 is finished translation support. They're also bugfixes, but no doubt it'll keep getting bugfixes after 1.0 release, like all games that complex.

avatar
Crosmando: EDIT: Why the heck is it 5GB? Did you include some texture mod?
D.R.E.A.M., for one, is a full texture pack (and then some).

The owner of the content owns their content and is fully within their right to use and distribute their content as they so desire for whatever reason they want. It’s exactly the same across all mediums and has been for years.
Steam workshop locks up thousands of mods behind a proprietary wall and no one bats an eyelid as an example. It’s quite possible to assume that GOG could profit by this by getting customers in via this free give away. The chap could be relying on ad revenues on other sites to make his work pay, and GOG then swipes that by including in their package. There are numerous connotations and just being free isn’t the be all and end all.

SpellSword: This post on the GOG forum suggests that the CompUSA quests and other improvements found in the UESP version may not be included in the GOG cut of Daggerfall Unity.

Can anyone confirm if they are in there?
Daggerfall Unity uses quests in human readable format, it comes with a decompiled versions of all the quests that were released for the classic game (I think a few are currently disabled because of compatibility issues, but I could be wrong).

avatar
SpellSword: I've also read that there is a Linux version of Daggerfall Unity, is there any chance of it being added on GOG?

All of these mods are from community sites, mostly NexusMods. Noone was making a penny off of any of these. Try again.

trusteft: Anyone who knows me well, knows I don't play mods. Unless a mod fixes a game breaking bug, I don't like using them. I rarely even try HD packs.

So this now is a thing and I have to admit I find it interesting, but as someone who has never played to finish the original Daggerfall, I wonder if I should give this a go or not.

I like the old graphics, I like the pixels, I like the 2D sprites. They feel right to me.

If there is one thing I would probably prefer with this GOG Cut, is the (I am guessing) improved controls.
You can play plain Daggerfall Unity then, and even use its retro mode to play in original 320x200 256 colors, or slightly nicer on the eyes 640x400 res, with Main Filter set to "Point". Disable SDF Fonts, Advanced Climbing, Combat AI, Enemy voices, and obviously Click-to-Attack.
Then just install mods that fix issues, like the Unofficial Block Location and Model fixes.
Maybe OPL-3 music tracks, to emulate SoundBlaster music rendering https://www.nexusmods.com/daggerfallunity/mods/79
And even add a mod that reimplement exploits that Daggerfall Unity normally fixes: https://www.nexusmods.com/daggerfallunity/mods/318. That one is up to you, most consider exploits another name for bugs.
That would give you the closest thing to a fully debugged classic Daggerfall.

I just saw this mod in the store and got it. Then, while looking through my games collection, I realised something weird: My copies of vanilla Daggerfall and Arena had disappeared. IIRC I got these two games as free goodies when I bought some other Bethesda game(s) on GOG a while ago - but at some point down the line, they must've just disappeared from my library. I'm assuming this happened when vanilla Daggerfall and Arena became available as regular free releases on the store.

So what I'm trying to say is: This is a nice release and all, but the fact that this made me realize that two games had just straight-up disappeared from my GOG library has left a really bad taste in my mouth. As far as I'm concerned, this should never happen, yet it's the second time for me (many years ago a bunch of games from the same purchase disappeared completely for me and I had to sort it out with support).

P.S.: Yes, I'm sure this issue has been brought up when Daggerfall and Arena became available as regular free games, but I don't think I should be required to keep an eye on forum discussions just to make sure GOG don't delete games from my library.
No thank you, if I wanted mods, I'll choose my own.

Nope. Vanilla Arena + Daggerfall (given for free when I first bought some ID games) are still on my account.
So it's an issue on your library.
Contact support.

Thank you, I have not checked before that my 2 games were removed as well (also a gift for Bethesda games purchase some years ago).

Super weird. I added the games just now, why contact support?

I remember that I got them for purchasing Wolfenstein 3D and Doom games. Maybe it's not the case for the first purchasers of Morrowind, hmm.

EDIT: I was wrong, it was Quake 1 on Dec 22, 2015.

How do you know? And as I said, it does not matter the reason, it is up to the owner of the content what they want to do. Not some random YouTuber or GOG to decide. If this was Nintendo they would have tanks on the ground within hours!

No need to contact support this time, since it's only free games that've disappeared. And since Cadaver747 seems to have the same problem, this isn't just an issue with my library.

So I guess I'm not the only one affected. But if this hasn't happened to everyone consistently, I wonder what the problem is...

I don't think it's normal for games to disappear like that. Specially since it's not an issue concerning all users (my games were never removed from the library) and it's not the first time OP has experienced such an issue.

EDIT:
I wonder if it's some bizarre issue related to the server stress from the sales on the website.

I agree that it's not normal, I'm not sure I want to contact GOG support for something with an easy to use workaround.

Exsurgent user lost some other games before?
