xarph It's been pretty much established since 2014 that there was no actual gamergate scandal, and the thread is now just a bunch of misogynists perpetuating negative stereotypes. GOG looks bad for hosting it. It should finally be closed or hidden.

What is your stance on a sextape being uploaded and the people in it facing ridicule because ''news-worthy''? They had alternate means but choose to go the way where there is a privacy question.
That the sum is too big is without question true. Other than that the article is about bad-faith suits, which are a different legal issue entirely, and probably something that needs to be regulated with legislation.
Still, it comes down to publishing of a sextape, which if it was a female celebrity would cause even more harm to her and that should never be publishable without consent. And what about Gawker's other misdeeds then if we're talking karma? What about publishing people's private chat conversations? What about their celeb stalking through mass man-hunt app? What about their countless ethical failings?
Bad faith suits are a tool of the rich wherever they exist and this one is no way the first or last. Other than that, it still remains true that no question of law regarding free press was settled in the case.

No significant question of law regarding freedom of press was answered in the Hogan vs. Gawker trial. Tell that to whatever fair-weather free-speech supporting blogger said there was.
This is dumb as balls, and the insistence with which you stick to these points probably shows the real reason you wanted the GG thread closed, just to feel mentally secure that discussion you disapproved of didn't take place.
And sad news if you thought it ended with the thread being closed. Just wait for another issue to come up and new threads will be up and your feeble cries of whataboutism will be the only references to gamergate in those.

He didn’t have the money. Donald Trump buddy Peter Thiel has literally bought gawker's demise. This was an alt-right successful attempt at using the plutocratic judicial system for fascist control of the press. Look it up, literally everybody else knows besides alt-right echo chambers like the gamergate thread.
Erpy I can see the principle behind a "containment thread", but I question its effectiveness in practice. In practice, the GG-thread was visible on the site's main community page on an almost daily basis, not just to the 20-or-so GG-fanatics who regularly posted in the thread, but also to the thousands of GOG-users who click the community-button at the top of the main page each day. It's kinda like having lots of houseguests over and then having your trash container in the middle of your living room. Yes, it acts as containment of sorts, but it's also extremely noticable to Tom, Dick and Harry entering the room.
Given how many users GOG has, the majority of which I assume don't regularly hang out on the fringes of 4-chan, I don't really see the GG-thread as something that makes for a good first impression on new members clicking the community button for the first time and seeing that one in the "what's popular" column.
Shadowstalker16 GG thread wasn't an alt-right thread though. There were some negative rep posters who were probably alt-right, but closing the thread wasn't the best course of action. The House Rules Fables linked talked about banning from forums and warnings from mods, which could have been given to individual perpetrators instead of closing the thread.
And again, a random collection of political opinions can be called alt right or whatever, but what's the point if they were made by different people from differing political backgrounds and some overly sensitive twat saw alt right in everything the same way Nazis see Jews in everything? Not the correct course of action.
And now we won't have a containment thread for these issues, so the usual suspects will be whining and crying when something new comes up anyway.
GabesterOne A sad day for free speech indeed folks, as I enjoyed reading the discussions and debates on the gamer gate thread on a weekly basis, sometimes joining in on the fun. Sadly GOG just killed one of its reasons I go to the forums once in a while (besides the word association game thread). GOG and the SJW's may have deleted the gamer gate thread, but gamer gate will always be around due to the SJW bs the gaming media loves to spew for click bait money.
Erpy Honestly, it was always a bit of an eyesore and if GOG decided to keep alt-right-related threads (either support or opposition) off the forum from now on, that'd probably reflect well on them in my book.
As a private company they're under no obligation to promote political views anyway.

There are forum rules, but the gamergate thread is still open? Let's take a look what's hot there today. Some guy with 4 patreon supporters and 9 followers has made a frankly imbecile youtube video, claiming to be a "veteran game designer" even though even Derek Smart has more claim to this title than this guy. Of course, as it tries to smear Anita Sarkeesian, the video immediately finds friends in the gamergate thread even though its contents are of course never discussed. Instead, we have instant and literal dehumanisation ("Who said she was human though?") and clear cut hate speech (" you are not the only one who hopes she would face an unfortunate fate"). Hey, GOG... this breaks all the forum rules I can personally actually think of. And it's clear enough that you don't want to close this thread because you're afraid of a backlash by literal fuckwits. It's unavoidable though, provided you don't want to become fuckwits yourselves. :(

In the context of the FBI document, it is important to note that what is “debunked” thorougly here are the very frequent claims by gamergate supporters that (a) those threats were ‘faked’ – i.e. made up by the victims – and (b) that in light of the faking, the victims didn’t contact the FBI at all. It is also important to note that besides a single case, the FBI was entirely unable and unwilling to help the victims, who got progressively more terrified as those authorities continued to embarrass themselves.

Telika The unmoderated GOG forums are indeed, now, an alt-right self-validation forum. t's not just the "gamergate" thread, but also a bunch of other creepy ones, from "europe is burning" (the title itself gives a good idea of the propaganda within), "good luck america" (independantly from the OP's intent), "brexit", etc. The place, being a safe haven for discourses that are inacceptable elsewhere, has become a rally point for these. And, as the most effective source of opinion formation, more than mass media or education, is peer discourses (here, other "gamers"), it is not without consequences. The gog forum echo chamber is a place of hate speech normalization and propagation. BUT, at this point, as most decent humans have left, closing one (which would be futile and arbitrary) or all these threads, or setting up and enforcing antiracist rules, would just trigger the remaining community's wrath. It would also mean deciding, case by case, for an acceptability threshold (in terms of alt-right speech which goes from impolite to polite propaganda, from slurs to pseudo-facts), and I doubt any GOG mod would take this responsability in our times of "Trump normality". I would say, this wish is now pointless, the "gamergate" thread is a detail, and these forums are simply done to the roots. If you miss foruming, find one with healthier ones.

Anything is derived from eugenics or nazism or hitlerism if you stretch it enough. It may also be derived from reasonable ideas as well and be interpreted without the benefit of the doubt. Either way asserting intention like that proves nothing about why someone used such a reference and leans more to the idea that you wanted them to be using concerned reference.

(2) "gamergate" is only an ideologically coherent "movement" (with self-declared yet universally accepted "members" who want particular, clear cut things like ethics in journalism) when it suits detractors, and when it suits detractors it's also or instead described as a de-centralized thing encompassing many entirely distinct ideologies with maybe-maybe-not bodies rendering the entirety of it completely nebulous, so it can never be attacked as a whole and not made responsible for anything, ever. To answer this strangely philosophical question for yourself, please do take a look at GOG's gamergate thread and the many completely different and ideologically diverse discussions about "cucks", "communists", "feminazis" and "SJW" going on there. I assure you, no questions as to the true nature of "gamergate" will remain. (3) Discussions were deleted on several boards in August 2014 because they were used to breed and organise harassment and to foster hate, as can be observed in the respective GOG thread often; no forum rules in any forum I would ever frequent allow this (4) gamergate communities formed primarily e.g. on 8chan, because that's where they could organize harassment campaigns undeterred. Most first-wave protest campaigns in the name of gamergate can be traced back to 8chan. (5) There is no second or third or other game journalist that the game developer in question allegedly slept with. One audience included the chan dwelling gamers and another included chan dwelling harassers (aka ''lolcow'' milkers). It had much to do with gaming because he let it slip that his gf who was a game developer was having romantic relationships with journalists, and those journalists did not disclose that relationship when they wrote about her, hence not disclosing conflict of interest. When this reached discussion forums like reddit, it was closed up and censored by the mods, as was done on 4chan. After the hashtag was coined, both the non harassing gamers and the harassers were branded as the same by the scared journos, and somewhere in there, gamejournopros mailing list was also exposed.
TL;DR everyoone is calling GG harassers even though it was a separate board / community which was harassing the guy's gf. Journos perpetuated this and now we have people and petitions like this by individuals who stopped checking for facts when they found something they liked to believe.

"Pretty much", that's not entirely correct: There was IN FACT no real scandal to kick off gamergate. Boiled down to the facts, people were running amok in mid August 2014 because a stalker wrote a blog containing lots of personal stuff about his ex-girlfriend (which had zip to do with gaming), and these people then faked concern about the ethical implications of ten words of positive coverage total about a by then one and a half year old entirely free indie game, allegedly written by a journalist in anticipation of possible FUTURE sexual favors from the developer (!). There was no "scandal", it was all completely overblown crap right from minute one – gamergate began its life as a collective and deeply abusive act of, if you want to call it that, social justice outrage.
Gnostic It is a good idea to close it, because people asking to close it will see how dumb they are when the GG related stuff go all over the place.
