BobBlusoe: I recently bought this game because it looked different and interesting and WOW is it fun. I love games that create a "virtual experience" and this one is great at that. I had a couple questions though about it.

1. Right Now, after I finish a mission I delete the logs from the NIC computer in Australia. I delete any logs from my IP, except I've heard that you should leave the last "access" log there so it doesn't look suspicious that there's only a disconnect log there. I delete the one in between those where it says I went to admin level. (I do this as well on any of the places that I can log in to their logs.) Am I doing this right or am I setting myself up for a game over?

2. I notice that when you finish a mission that "target computer/server" is still on your list, though it may be "switched off" of the main map. My first instinct would be to reuse every one from all the missions to create a giant chain of computers so that my trace time would be longer...is there any reason not to do this? Will it somehow pinpoint my gateway if I go overboard? And will it put the blame somehow on them, turning my "attitude" meter into "evil" status? Because I'd rather stay neutral or good.

3. I bought the "Internet Chat" software from the uplink store assuming it was an ingame feature, but I noticed that the requirements say "The local machine must be connected to the internet". Considering the whole game is taking place "on the internet", I'm now thinking this must be a REAL chat for players of the game, and that the description was for my REAL machine, not my local ingame machine. Is this true? Is this just a communication tool for players or is it AI/Story/Ingame stuff?

4. I downloaded the uMP3 mod to play music in the game because I was getting tired of the same songs but I can't get it working. Has anyone done this?

Thanks for all your help, I'm really enjoying this game!
1. I usually leave two logs at InterNIC. One that shows I connected to it and one that shows I disconnected. Most of the time, I use the highest level log deleter and delete everything on INterNIC and so far that strategy worked :D.

2. The more hops you have the more trace time you have. I have had at least 20+ hops to the point where you couldn't even see the map because of the criss-crossing lines all over :D. Just remember to delete any logs at the InterNIC that show you going elsewhere and you should be fine As far as your rating, the kind of missions you take and complete changes your rating. If you take missions that require you to destroy a mainframe or steal data then your rating will veer towards the good, if you take missions where the point is to put someone in jail or trace a fellow hacker then your rating changes towards the bad side.

3. The IRC soft that you purchaes in-game can be used to go into a real IRC channel. So yes, you can play the game and chat in IRC while you're doing it. I almost went into the unofficial GOG IRC channel to test out the IRC client but I was worried it would say something about me being on Uplink and have people wondering just why am I playing Uplink before release time :D

4. If the mod works and doesn't break the game, then it should be fine.

BobBlusoe: Thanks for the response!

Interesting..."Good" and "bad" are in the context of a hacker rather than a general moral context.

I don't think I'll use the IRC software if that's the case. I don't really need it.

Of course, I stupidly tried to hack into Uplink Services and got disowned by them, so I'll have to start again tomorrow. Still, it's an addictive game.

And as for the Music mod, the problem is that the game doesn't seem to recognize it. Oh well, I can always just turn music off and run itunes in the background.

Thanks again!
It's sad that the mods were never kept up to date with the version changes in Uplink. IIRC, some of them will only work with version 1.35 or something like that and that version won't even run on modern PCs. However, if you do find a mod that works with version 1.55 of the game, it should work with version 1.6, which is version 1.55 but with the original copy protection removed. Your mileage may vary and all that :D
