You forgot Duck Hunt and the whole game is built to be like Grand Theft Auto :D It's referenced during the bank heist where the cop is looking through his binoculars...

NerdKoopa: Good call, I added Duck Hunt among with Rygar, Double Dragon, Street Fighter, Dr. Mario, Bayou Billy, Friday the 13th, Devo, Mötley Crue, Elvis Presley and Fabio. Also, I did mention Grand Theft Auto already, and the second game in particular because the Spray 4 Pay shops are a reference to the Pay 'n' Spray shops (I can't remember if they were called that in the later games too).
There's also a temple with John Romero inside :D

Also, the Legend of Zelda has more than one reference: The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (the side-scrolling Zelda on the NES) is directly referenced by the shopkeeper (null) :D

NerdKoopa: I said in the first post that I didn't count straight cameo appearences, so I didn't mention the appearences by John Romero, Phil Fish, Epic Meal Time and so on. Also, I should have mentioned that when I listed Super Mario Bros and Legend Of Zelda, I meant that the game references those two series in general, because I didn't want to list every individual title.
Bill Cosby (and Jell-O and the movie Ghost Dad) are referenced during one mission. I would say which one but I don't want to spoil anything for anyone :D

NerdKoopa: I did beat all the main story missions and the side missions too, but I don't remember seeing those references. I guess I gotta go find them now.
Replay the Circle of Death stage where you take over the Grim Reaper for a bit and pay close attention to the dialogue :D

NerdKoopa: Added Star Trek, Ernest, Sinistar and IBM to the list. 93 references! Just.... wow.
I forgot to mention that even the title itself is a parody/reference. There was once an NES game called River City Ransom. I guess you could count that as a reference :D

Happy reference hunting! :D

NerdKoopa: I knew about that, but according to Brian Provinciano, it was completely unintentional. That's why I didn't include it.
Awwww no fair as River City Ransom was one of my favorite NES games back in the day :D

Aarontu: How about the reference to the "Choose your own Adventure" book series when you get your first side quests? Player says "I can choose my own open-world adventure!"
(Those are the words bolded by the game itself, not me)

Should TMNT also appear as a video game reference? Namely, the TMNT van, the underwater stages, and the enterance/exits to the sewer sequences are lifted directly from the TMNT NES game.

Anyone else think that the news reporter is a cross between April O'Neil (TMNT reporter) and Chun Li (Street Fighter II cop)?
TMNT is the second reference listed :D
