Although it never achieved the same huge success as some of the other PC greats, Interstate 76 was a hugely original game when it launched in 1997. It took the furious road battles of the Mad Max movies and re-imagined them in an alternate history america of the 1970s. It remains today the most definitive example of car combat in video games - often copied but never yet equalled. Every aspect of the game draws you into the universe. The maps for each mission are unique, each scribbled on napkins or scrap paper or diner menus. The cinematics use the same models as the engine, to keep continuity. The character models themselves are elegantly simple. The voice acting is top notch. The soundtrack is original funk written specially for the game and recorded in a studio - it far surpassed the mostly electronic soundtracks of the time. Everything about the game speaks of commitment to detail, of a huge amount of time and effort invested by a small team to create something wonderful.
