MeddlingMonk: Hard to believe this is still active. However, maybe I should add that the problem I originally described happened with the original GOG installer. With the 2.0 installer, for whatever reason, IWD seems to run from a hard drive larger than 2 TB just fine. I'm not sure whether that's due to some technical reason or just dumb luck. But anyone who installed IWD using the 1.0 installer and has problems may want to redownload and give the 2.0 installer a try and see if their luck is the same.
2.0 has this issue addressed., so luck had little to do with it ;)

malkith0: Would installing mods mess with this at all? I managed to fix the issue by installing to another drive, but I was using the 2.0 installer.

grogerson: Mods don't mess with the installer, or the IDMain.exe as a rule, so the answer should be no.
As long as you won't change the name of executable, you should be ok.
